HELP NEEDED FOR TOKYO CITIZENS

A friend from a friend while talking about the Fukushima power plant accident
needed my help to disseminate this message, I hope they will find a reply here :

A Request from a Japanese Citizen

Todos Somos Japon

Shiro Yabu has sent us a request for foreign friends:

Now what we are in desperate need in Tokyo is concrete data of radioactive contamination. We will have to measure and publicize the radiation of the soil at every park and public spaces where children play. The emission of radiation is uneven and there are supposed to be high spots that are affected more than others. Neither the state nor the Tokyo municipal government are responsible enough to measure and detect them. They offer only one monitoring spot in Tokyo and do not measure contamination in soil at all. The real issue is especially the radiation of sandboxes in parks. So we must acquire data by ourselves and press local governments to take necessary measures.
What we want at the moment is a possible method to measure radiation and necessary equipment. In Japan a Geiger Counter can be purchased for approx. 50,000 yen, but they are mostly sold out. It is said that they won’t be back in market before the late May. If any of you have technique and equipment that you can share, please send them to us in the form of information and goods.

IF YOU COULD HELP, PLEASE EMAIL at http://jfissures.wordpress.com/ AND WE WILL SEND YOU NECESSARY INFORMATION FOR THE NEEDS IN JAPAN.

If you can't answer directly to this request try sending
it in other forums where they will achieve their goals

Thanks for them

going by some of the posts in the blog ... i wouldnt trust em with whatever they want, i'd rather give my money to the red cross.

While the intent is a very understandable and noble one the goal would be very difficult to reach. Getting the hardware is not the issue. Using it correctly is, and it's not really something that you pick up in a day or two. Getting the numbers is easy. Understanding the numbers it's giving you is something else altogether. When it comes to actually narrowing the numbers down to determining which isotopes are responsible for those numbers (the important part) you're pretty much out of luck as that hardware is very expensive and requires significant training to use.

Hi

Sitz,

They don't need money, they just need monitoring equipment and
informations how to use it, helping the red cross is also a good
idea as Japan is in a very sad situation.

Seems that what I have read since on month on radioactivity is
more complicates as it looks. Main elements coming from nuclear
crashes are Iodine, Caesium and Plutonium with differents nuclear
masses. The threat is different if it emits Alpha, Beta or Gamma
waves isn't it ? whatever the source is couldn't they have a simple
siverts meter to check the radioactivity and get an idea of the
danger levels ? they wait an answer from experts. If you have any
contact or informations let them know... even if it's complicate this
is a question of life and survival for them.

Thank you both for your answers,
this doesn't mean that this thread is closed...

I'm afraid I cannot directly help them because of the nature of my job. I work in the field for the Navy and therefore must be cautious about what I say "in the open". That's the main reason I have not said much here on this subject.

That said, I can help you a bit with the physics involved. The "waves" you speak of are actually particles given off by the decay of the given isotope. You are correct in terms of the differing effect each particle has. They are looked at in terms of quantity emitted, energy level and particle size. They are also looked at in terms of how far they can travel and what materials can block them. I will leave further research on that to you, as it would make this a very long reply if I were to attempt it here! The problem is that those basic radiacs can't tell you anything more than a total level, which will also include any natural occurring radioactivity depending on the sensitivity of the instrument. Unless you happen to know what that background level was before this happened you have no way of knowing if you really "found" something.

When you do your research you are interested in Cs-137, Io-181, and to a lesser extent Pl
