Hi, guys. Sorry to post here but I was playing cfs2 the previous day. Today, suddenly, the pc hangs at the hp logo screen and stays there without going to Vista. It is doing it constantly. I tried unplugging and replugging the wires back in and no go. tried rebooting and nothing. have done this between 10-20 times. Also, the keyboard is unrsponsive. The light does not come on and you cant get into bios via f10 key. However, the keyboard does work as I am writing this on another pc. Could it be my Hard drive going? Any help appreciated. thx.

I also, tried to disconnect the cable to the card reader as described in this post here but no good.

Only thing I did this past week was install silent hunter 2 and rollback my nvidia drivers to the prev ones but it was working fine after that rollback.

pc specs:
HP core 2 duo 2.4 ghz,2.4
nvidia geforce 8300gs
2gb ram
320gb hard drive and exyernal drive for 1tb
windows vista 32 bit

I am not much good at pc. Today I noticed that both my HP computers did their monthly test. Have you seen this? It takes about a half hour on this machine and over an hour on my other. It starts about 8 AM. It seems to check all areas of your pc and then (hopefully) says each item has passed. It is an automatic thing. Maybe what you did with your card is causing a problem?

I had thought my wife's pc was a goner, I stuck in the recovery discs and finally got it work. If it comes to this, it's real easy and you can back up your stuff, so it says.

Can you get to the system restore?

Let's hope one of the high tech fellas knows what is going on.:salute:

hi, the keboard does not respond, how can i do system restore? The f10 and f11 dont work. i am typing this response on another pc with the same keyboard and it works so it is not the keyboard.
I am suspecting it could be the internal hard drive but have no way to check as the pc starts up then goes to this hp invent logo screen.

dmaloof,

If you can see your motherboard, locate the little, round, flat battery. Unplug the power cord. Remove the battery for about a minute. Put it back on the motherboard. Plug the power cord back into the power supply and start it up.

This should reset your BIOS. Barring a serious motherboard or chip problem, this may allow you to get back into you BIOS.

Hope this helps.

Hello dmaloof.

It seems like the BIOS has errors.
I'm afraid this is the worst case scenario in the boot sequence.

Open your chassis and find a pair of pins that wipes and initializes the BIOS
and short-circuit them.
(All the mother boards have ones.)

Then, boot up your PC.

If above works, your PC start just like when you had purchased it.
If not, I recomend you call the help desk.

Hope this helps.

Its definitely BIOS related, but if the tips offered by Geary and Igacci don't pan out, its gonna be memory going bad. This will hang a boot every time and prevent BIOS access as well. This may be a good time to upgrade your RAM.

Question.
Is your keyboard USB?
You will need a ps2 keyboard to configure the bios unless bios is already set to support USB legacy, usb keyboards should be pugged into on-board usb not a PCI USB card if they are to be used at bios level.

dmaloof,

Once you've reset your BIOS, try hitting the escape key when the computer boots to the hp invent logo screen.

If this works with your computer it might allow you to see what's happening behind the logo screen during the startup/boot process and it might identify the hangup.

Also try re-seating the RAM. Ensure power cord and monitor signal cable are disconnected. Then simply pop the memory chips up abit and push them back in until they reseat.

Good time to reseat all power and signal cables as well (includng the disk drive and ribbob cables), and ensure the interior is dust free.

I have seen at work, when an HP unit will not fire up, I disconnect all the external cables, manually carry the beast 1/4 mile to my office, blow it out, plug it up on the workbench and it works the first time. Not sure why but it has happened many times. Either being totally disconnected for 30 minutes, or the jostling it takes as I lumber to my office, or a combination of that and reseating all cables and RAM.

I found that the disk usually does not spin up when this happens, and after my little excursion, and some threatening remarks to it, it comes to life.

Leave your cover off and reconnect all cables. Turn the unit on and you should hear the beast fire up, the disk chatter a little, have no error signaling beeps, and see a green light somewhere on the motherboard.

If the unit will still not fire up, and if you cannot hear the disk spin up, remove the disk from the cage for awhile, then re-insert it, try again.

If you get past the BIOS boot, yet cannot get Vista to reboot, then try booting up in Safe mode. After the bios boots, hold down the F8 key until you get the prompt screen to boot in safe mode. If you can get to here, then continue in safe mode, then do a system restore back to a date when things were fine.

If you cannot get booted in Safe Mode, then load the System Restore disk, power off, then ON and do a system repair option. This just fixes/replaces any mangled software. If that doesn't work, then the last option is a full system restore.

Thanks for coming to the rescue again, boys! I use Milton's threatening remarks idea all the time, after that I usually kiss it a few times. Never does much good. Hope one of the gurus ideas works for ya, dmaloof. What a bunch of geniu?, genus?, smart guys we have here! :salute::salute::salute:

Hi, update. GearyMcS, I tried removing battery and put back in and nothign happened. I hit escape and turned it on and said loading boot menu and then nothing. Then I tried disconnecting the hard drive cables, memory card reader cables, reseated the RAM and did not see dust or sirt. However, there was no light on the motherboard yet the fan and ps work because the green light on the plug in the back was on. However, it is now making a beeping noise so i dont know what to do.

One more thing. i did notice when i turned the monitor on, it sais vga: no signal. But the monitor is plugged into the pc. Alos, this monitor works because i am typing this from the same monitor just different hp pc.

sounds like things have changed since you popped the battery.
bleeping is good in that it indicates something is alive.
can you describe the bleep in terms like "one long two short" for example?

Troubleshooting Beeps and Bad Hardware

This may help:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=bph07107

And you can download beep codes for any make:

http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-1043759.html

Or, you can just Google HP BIOS BEEP CODES

Getting beeps means something is not good, If you have no light on the motherboard, also an issue. Could be power supply ... Are all fans spinning especially the cpu and power supply fans, is the disk drive light on front, can you hear it working? You can try to disconnect the CD/DVD drive, and any non-necessary hardware and try again.

The beeps were long beeps or 1 long beep than a break and then another long beep and over and over.
