Help! PC won't detect CD-Rom

I wasn't trying to be holier than anyone, I use the "patch" myself.

I just think that if this site appears to condone or advocate the use of such a file we will have a harder time refuting the charges the next time someone accuses us of being a nest of pirates.

Just remember folks - the no CD hack/crack/utility/whatever absolutely CAN NOT be passed around on SOH servers. We have always had a good relationship with Microsoft, and since it can be used to pirate the Sim, any mention of where/how to get it other than just saying "Google it" is very much taboo. There are likely some sites that will try to pass off infected files.

On the other hand, right after the releases of CFS3 and FS2004 Mickey$oft themselves recommended the unnamed file as a good way to improve the performance of the sim.

No use in trying to be holier than the pope...

Just my two €cents worth...

Dumonceau.

Not trying to be snotty, but could you point us to where M$oft suggested this?

I've also heard that MS at one time endorsed the cracked exe, but the last time I actually spoke with someone at Microsoft, I was told that the only way to get around a damaged CD4 was to purchase another copy. If anyone at MS ever actually did endorse it, I'm pretty sure that it was not done by anyone that actually had that authority.

Thanks very much for all your kind advice Gentlemen. :salute:

I am now back up & running and we should be able to manage the latest leg of the African tour (Durban to East London) in the next few days... :gameon:

sounds like a "Wikileak" sort of, from some one at M$oft who realized the stupidity of their ways.

I have no qualms about the solution for those who own a legal copy, so as to make things easier and avoid damage to the now "precious" install cds. It was one of the dumber ideas M$oft came up with to insure legal copies.

Hi guys,

Thanks very much for all the good advise. I decided to make it easy for myself. Will buy an external drive.

Cheers,
Maarten

Hi,

Another way of saving your set-up is to use a cloud based back-up facility...this idea has just come down to me:icon_eek: and it really seems a pretty good one, for a change. There are some programs, JustCloud, for instance which offer unlimited storage; my own very basic setup is 20GB, so you get an idea of how much storage you might need. It says it's free so I'm going to take a look. And you only need back up what bits you cannot repeat if your drive goes down; there is no need to save the basic set-up as you already have the discs etc.

Andy.

20 gig? Just my mesh is almost four times that. Last year I bought a 1 terabyte external hard drive (to replace a 500 gig) where I keep ALL my files I don't want to lose. They're cheap, only about $100. I'm thinking about buying another just for insurance. I don't even want to think about losing all those files.

A long time ago I decided I wouldn't buy a game if I had to put the cd in the drive every time to play. I hate that and it wears out the disk. If I couldn't get a nocd patch for a game, I'd live without it. Just my personal preference. Fortunately fs9 has them available. I even followed some instructions from Nick at Flight1 and modified it to allow fs9 to use 4 gig of ram with a 64 bit operating system. Stock fs9 won't use more than 2 gig of ram. So when I install fs9 which seems to happen now and then, I then apply the patch and replace the exe. Then I put the disk back in the little cardboard folder for safe keeping. If mods here will allow it, I'll send the file to anyone who asks and says he actually bought the game. Lord knows, I've gotten so much from you guys here, this would be a good way to pay back.
