• There seems to be an uptick in Political comments in recent months. Those of us who are long time members of the site know that Political and Religious content has been banned for years. Nothing has changed. Please leave all political and religious comments out of the forums.

If you recently joined the forums you were not presented with this restriction in the terms of service. This was due to a conversion error when we went from vBulletin to Xenforo. We have updated our terms of service to reflect these corrections.

Please note any post refering to a politician will be considered political even if it is intended to be humor. Our experience is these topics have a way of dividing the forums and causing deep resentment among members. It is a poison to the community. We appreciate compliance with the rules.

    The Staff of SOH

  • Server side Maintenance is done. We still have an update to the forum software to run but that one will have to wait for a better time.

Members and Friends

Many of you who are long-term members may remember that in years past 'Ickie' would promote members to Staff status (once a year) to help run the site. Since his death in late 2016 we, or more specifically I (Dangerousdave26), have neglected to do that. We now are facing a staffing shortage in the Moderators and Admins sections. Today I have to ask for some of you to step up and help run and/or govern the site for the future.

We need moderators for the following forums and all relevant sub forums.

Ickie's NewsHawks

Canelo's Cantina

MSFS (FS2024)

Outhouse Neighborhood

Support Central

Moderator Positions

Moderator job description:

  • Managers sticky threads for relevance, content and age as required
  • Moderates or edits content as required by SOH rules and guidelines.
  • Manages member conflicts as diplomatically as possible (within established rules and guidelines).
  • Moderators should be impartial, firm, fair and compassionate
While it would be desirable for Moderators to log on and check their respective forum(s) daily we realize that we all have real world lives and this is just a hobby. If you take a position and find there will be extended days where you cannot log in (for whatever reason) we normally ask for coverage help in the Staff Forum so that fellow Moderators/Admins can step in should issues arise.

Administrator Positions

We need Administrators which will first come from our pool of current Staff and we will add additional members as needed.

The job of Administrator used to be separated into three groups, Junior Admins, Administrators and Senior Administrators. As much as I would like to continue with the tiered structure of management the Xenforo software does not easily allow that function. There can only be one group of Administrators with the new software.

Administrator’s job description:

  • Helps make the decisions that allow the site to grow
  • Helps make the site related policy
  • Votes on all important policy decisions
  • Votes on all user disciplinary actions
  • When necessary, performs Moderation duties (such as covering for absent Mods).
Some administrators have special roles as follows:

Help desk

  • Answers emails from the support@sim-outhouse.org help desk email address
  • Resets passwords
  • Upgrades user accounts
  • Delete user accounts as requested following set policy decisions.
Server administrator

  • Manages server directly in the Control Web Panel interface
  • Runs operating system updates
  • Maintains/upgrades Forum Software
  • Maintains Ron’s (Ickie) Websites (ronnylarson.com, hall18.com, hall-18.com)
  • Provides support for additional sites hosted on the SOH server example https://ford-tri-motor.net
Backup Administrator

  • Maintains offsite backup of all websites on the server
  • Maintains offsite backup of Mariadb databases for all necessary websites on the server

Financial Administrator

  • Operates Donation drive
  • Maintains Paypal account or other donation system(s)
  • Pays hosting company
  • Renews Domain names
  • Renews Forum software License
  • Renews Control Web Panel License
Since 2011 I (Dangerousdave26) have occupied the Help Desk, Server Administrator, Backup Administrator and Financial Administrator positions (with help from PRB). The time has come to pass these jobs on to new members. At this point it would be better to break up the roles into something more manageable for each role. These roles must be filled before the next donation drive as I (Dangerousdave26) can no longer maintain this level of commitment.

All of this year’s upgrades have been designed to give the site the best chance of continuing for years to come but it is going to need new Admins/Moderators to allow that to happen.

If we can’t fill the Special Role Administrator positions then SOH will have to close at the end of this financial year's licensing/server rental period as there will be no one to ensure it's future operation.

SOH NEEDS YOU!

I would be pleased to assist (this is a great site), but like many that enjoy this site I'm getting "long in the tooth". I can't commit for a really long time, but as some finance guy once said, the long term is just a bunch of short terms put together. DD26 (kind of reminds me of DD214), let me know how I can help.

I can help out in the Moderator department on the side, just not with MSFS 2024 for I don't use 2020/2024; only FS9 & CFS2. :)

if any positions are still open, id like very much to help, and i literally have nothing but time, i can have it open and lookin around, anytime of day or night.

I will help if asked . I’m not running for President but I don’t mind doing something if I’m needed.

Any help needed on the Fs2004 side?
I've plenty of time on my hands, & I'd like to put back onto SOH for the great times I've had here!

I don't think there is much soldering in plumbing these days! It seems like it is all plug-n-play now since the invention of Pex tubing and SharkBite fittings! ;)

This is all copper heating plumbing. I could do it myself but the actual soldering I will hire out. The small stuff 1 inch or less I can do easily enough but the bigger stuff 1 1/4 I think it is better to have a Pro do it
