Re: Auto Updates

Sounds like you may not have quite gotten rid of them. Make a list of the program names.

I have Windows XP Pro on all my computers (except Win 7 Pro on one laptop) and if I were seeing this, I would start by going to my Control Panel and selecting "Add/Remove Software" and see if the name of the offending program(s) pops up.

If it does, you probably uninstalled with the program software uninstaller which DOES NOT NECESSARILY remove ALL components of the software. Remove it again via the Control Panel.

After that's done, do a Search for the name(s) on your list and see if any folders are left. If so, just delete them to make sure all are gone.

Just my $0.02.

If I remember right you can stop any single update from being offered through Windows Updates and Internet Explorer. My kids LT had this same situation where they thought they had removed bloatware from MS (OK software they had no use for) but still got updates for things that were no longer 'whole'. Open IE and click 'Tools' then 'Windows Update', click on 'Custom' and let it search for updates. When the list comes up and you see one for something you know you don't have or don't use, click on the small + box and check the box 'Don't show this update again'. The update you refused will be kept out of the loop from further updates but can be fetched back if needed by scrolling down the left side of the IR window until you see 'Restore Hidden Updates'. The caution is that it's not always clear what program depends on another for proper operation and updates can get screwed up if not installed in proper sequence. However, I've stopped updates for a small handful of MS business programs I never use and have had no issues I'm aware of yet. If you want to get rid of programs thoroughly I recommend Revo Uninstaller using the Advanced Method, checking select all and delete at each point. Hope this helps out.
