Here I Go Again - Reggie - SM-79 Racer - Golden Age

Well the computer was not stable enough for this plane.

More work necessary before I can try again.

Landed safely in Rome

At approx 2:09 into the flight over Interlaken Switzerland, started climb from cruise altitude of 11,400 ft to 13,000 ft to clear pass between Junghau and Monch in Swiss Alps. was able to descend after clearing the pass between the peaks. Total time above 12K - approx 6 min 30 sec.

Otherwise, a great flight despite FPS down as far as 10-11 for much of the time when in clouds. Had almost 15 FPS for approach and landing.

After a short stop in Rome for fuel, coffee, sandwiches and to empty the honey bucket - we are off for Iraklion, Crete (LGIR).

Great send off from the home town crowd!!!

PawPaw and his faithful crew of Vinny, Tony, Gino and Mia back on the road again.

(My grandchildren's real names are Vincent, Anthony, Giovanni and Mia - and we ain't Italian on my family or their father's family)

Departing Iraklion for Baghdad. Long day since starting at 0630 in Mildenhall. Will arrive at Baghdad after dark - but that makes finding the city easier.

Landed safely at Baghdad at 2136 local time

In the dark I was a bit south and over Lake Razazah near Karbala when I realized I was off course and have to turn back to Baghdad. Probably lost about 15-20 minutes.

Another good tailwind for most of the trip.

11:08:21 flight time today - 2,457.6 nm covered

Landed safely at Jask - OIZJ at 10:20 local - 06:50 UTC

Good thing the weather cleared in the last 100 miles. No NDB near this airport. Just a unique shaped peninsula which made the airport easy to find in good visibility.

holy cow! those are some stretchy legs you got there! that crack italian crew must know how to keep teh sm 79 flying. but which one makes the coffee?

nice runs!!

Grandson Tony is the co-pilot, grandson Gino is the mechanic, granddaughter Mia is the navigator and grandson Vinny is the cook.

Much of our third leg from Crete to Baghdad occured at night. The sun set while we crossed over Cyprus. Made a faster trip than my last one from Larnica to Beirut in a CH-53.

But it was pitch dark - barely could make out the lights of Beirut.

Coming into Baghdad, found I had drifted far south of my course and had to back track north about 40 miles to the airport. Cost us probably 20 minutes. Not much to photograph in the dark.

Leaving Baghdad at dawn on the second day, our first stop was Jask near the mouth of the Gulf. Very favorable winds and a short enough leg for a full power run. As usual near the Gulf, the visibility went south, but also as expected near the open ocean, the skies cleared and Jask came up right one course and time.

Down safely in Jodhpur - local time 1615

As usual the weather closed in as we approached Jodhpur. One reason to use this airport is that the NDB one the end of the runway allows us to line up for landing even if we cannot see the runway.

That will be it for today. Allahabad is not a good place for a night landing in low visibility as the Panderjager discovered yesterday.

By my count - 18:15:49 flight time - 4,122.5 nm
