Hey Helldiver...

Not a very good pic but the windshield frame and canopy rails look like a SB2C to me as well. Maybe the folks in Maui need to brush up on their aircraft recognition. :d

That definitely is a SB2C Helldiver. The depth between the cockpit railing and the top of the wing root and the lack of a sharp wedge just ahead of the cockpit that houses the guns, Plus it's much too wide for the Dauntless. The SBD was a small, dainty aircraft. The SB2C was a brute.

Well, the cat would be out of the bag sooner or later - probably when/if the plane is successfully recovered. Hard to figure out the Navy's reasoning with submerged aircraft. A plane can decompose underwater for 60+ years and nobody cares, but just let somebody attempt to recover it and suddenly it's a precious historic artifact that the Navy must protect (i.e. confiscate). USAF has a more common-sense policy: if you can recover the bird it's yours, have a ball.
