HMAS Melbourne (R21)

It would seem the green deck lasted a good bit longer than either of us thought, the shots on the following link are all dated as 1977:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/41311545@N05/with/5449475158/
Rather confusingly I've seen other shots captioned as 1976 where she has a grey deck with a red deck strip, others captioned as being 1980 with a grey deck and red strip.
I'm sure I've seen a shot of one of the Blue/Green A-4's onboard with a yellow deck strip, which would place the shot as post 1980 though for the moment I can't find it.

The link above is full of shots I've never seen before, sadly they don't seem to be in any particular order.

Certainly a hard topic to research! It does look green indeed, but the entire picture looks greenish and the exact grey/green colour shade is hard to judge right. I have read somewhere that the RAN used a more greenish grey for their ships (to blend better in in the tropics) as well compared to the RN and their ships which were mostly in the Atlantic. Regardless the "green" looks a lot more greyish than the paint scheme used on RN and RCN carriers. The contrast with the rest of the deck points to it being a separate colour which favour the green option.

When it comes to the centre line so have at least my research shown no red line before the last paint job in 1980. But I have found a few 1980 pictures mislabelled as in the 70s. This fits with the original RN deck colour scheme from the 1950/60's. The RN introduced the red/white centreline fairly late on their carriers and if I remember right only when they started to paint the deck dark grey. I can of course be completely wrong..

It could of course be that they painted the decks rather often to make life hard for us...lol

Ever since I did a couple RAN repaints for the A4G I've been wanting a Melbourne. There was one in an old razbam A-4 package but something for FSX is definitely needed. Great idea to get this started Jens-Ole.
:ernae:

Yeah, it should be great to finally have a home at sea for the Aussie Skyhawks! I also was a happy user of Ron's Melbourne in FS9. Thanks for painting up the RAN Golf Shooters! Will it be possible to get a paint it their very first scheme without the chequered red and white tail art? I plan on making at least 2, maybe 3 time period textures for Melborune; 1. 1950s-67, 2. 1969-70s, 3. 1980s. I will be great to have shooters in their time period paintscheme's.

I have some news for you... The first try at Melbourne is now painted, I'll see if I can have a test file up here on the thread later on today.

Lazarus: is it possible to release a new model of the majestic-class without the strange wake effect?

Hi everybody! What I miss?
Jens, that looks great! Majestic too, cannot wait. I'll see to an updated model within the next 36 hrs or so. I'll try for sooner, as I'm just finalizing some features to lay on you all to test out...

A bit of a digression into some side issues that started all of this a year and a bit ago. Period AI Planeguard helios. Which led to this whole shipbuilding/ Fleet rehabilitization/modernization program.
What else? Static S-2s, Baldy's FSDS HUP with animated rotors for plane guard. With a bit of luck, S-55/S-58's for pedros on the way, and folded Gannets for Melbourne. The static deckpark an AI Pedro thing is well in hand, and lots of possibilities for the Essex's, Colossi, a freeware CVAN-65 covered in Phabulous Phantoms...

Hi, Lazarus :salute:

One of your last projects was that Soviet light carrier and as far as we have the Iris MiG-29K with Indian Navy repaint. Do you think you will consider this, sir?

I have a reference model for vikramaditya, but my carrier requests from other users are coming in thick and fast so i'm struggling to even start this one!...over to you Laz! (PS - you'll need to let me in on your AI planeguard implementation....I remember reading a thread about it but can't find it)

I wonder if it's my proximity to Rosyth that i've become a virtual shipyard myself....

Hi, Gary

That's so nice, sir :applause: I'm glad to hear that you'll have the next project after Oriskany. :jump: :jump: :jump:

Currently my backlog of requests are:

HMS Illustrious (hopefully tomorrow)
HMS Ark Royal V (soon after...lots of people e-mailing me for this)
USS Coral Sea
USS Hancock
HMS Invincible with Sea Dart fit (for Wilco Sea Harrier....model done just need some static SHARs)
USS Forrestal
HMS Queen Elizabeth (STOVL) - these two are for myself
HMS Prince of Wales (CATOBAR)
HMS "can't decide on a name yet" (QE class STOBAR with a Naval Typhoon....bit of fun)
And now - INS Vikramaditya depending if no one else picks it up....but I would like to have a go at landing the Iris Mig-29 on her!

:)

Very, exciting sir :jump: :jump: :jump: everyone of them. We might not have an Indian member here, but when I did some touch&go on KIEV with the Iris Mig-29K(Indian Navy repaint) and posted the some screenshots in an FSX page in facebook, Many Indian members there were very excited. I'm not an Indian, I'm from Thailand but I'm really love those carriers in FSX and hoping to have every carriers. Even in the Royal Thai Navy also has a carrier in its service and we in Thai community have been dreaming for so long to have her in FSX too. :jump::jump::jump:

There ya go. The IN has certainly had more than a heap of grief with that job. Hope they're happy with the ship (Good luck! Low freeboard, Y-shaped hull carried over from the Kiev's- awful seaboats!) Doing business with the Russians! Pfuui ! You need deep pockets for just for blat (booze, hookers, Rollex's) before you even get to paying for hardware. I can only imagine; based on the 10 minute TBO's on land based MiG29's, that MiG 29K's probably get thrown away or mailed back to Belarus for overhaul after one sortie.
Ah, India's dreams of empire. As long as some one else invents it all first for em. Glad I'm going to be dead in 15-20 years(probably less ;), because; to miss quote the Tellus adverts...
' The future looks UNfriendly!')
Enough of the world. Any more of that, and I'll start drinking, and that's unseemly before noon.

AI helios. I drew a circle in FSDS, assigned a key frame rotation animation, exported the rotors, one flat, one on end, and scale and placed using MDLX's merge feature on Baldy's helio hulls after removing the rotors. Assigned the rotor anim ation name as 'Ambient' I used Baldy's sources as he ULs and encourages development of the files, and they are very light weight. The HUP looks really good, HOS4 and HUS a bit less so, but all right for the job for now.
Seaking, KA-27 next, and at a later date, I am going to revisit a HSS sitting on the drive as a Wessex.
Need repaints for the deckpark! The S-2's are Tomohito Unayama's (does any one have any current contact information?) from fs2002- there must be other repaints out there, but they are easy to paint. Gannet is Ito-Sans. Again, it would be nice if an email would get replied to, vis a viz permissions.

Nice! Did you get my Melbourne deck texture? I'll get you a 50-60s deck paint as well for the Gannets!
Is it possible to get a non hump A-4? Maybe we shall ask Ron for using his FS9 A-4G..
On the current build I have had some strange lights running down the length of the deck which turn up during dusk/nighttime and not the LM painted night texture.

The Virtavia A-4G is great fun to land on the Melbourne, really brings home the small dimensions of the ship and angled landing deck... All in all the Skyhawk must have been the perfect fighter with its compact size and actually quite good performance (in the fighter role with just 2 sidewinders), it was very much lacking in the sensor suite though as it had no a2a radar.

Looking forward to the new textures for Melbourne when you release them JensOle.
I have been working on new deck textures for the Essex, (Hornet so far) but plan
on doing the rest of the short hulls in class. Also reworking the rest of the
ship but the mapping makes it hard to get things lined up. Here are a couple pics
showing progress so far. I'm not to happy with the deck numbers and the color of
the deck (its deck blue) but looks tan to me.:isadizzy:

Nice! Really a nice model and of course paint!

Back on track, back to HMAS Melbourne. The original angled deck as seen through the 1950's and most of the 60s.

Rob Richardson has some nice DH Sea Venom FAW.53 and Fairey Gannet AS.1, but they both need some paint to bring them up to todays standards.
