The other day my neighbor showed me an envelpoe he got in the mail from the US Dept. of Commerce, no name on it just the address. Inside was all kinds of questions they felt they had no business asking. And After I looked thru it he promptly filed it back to where he pulled it out of..... #13.

I noticed that on the letter it said the recipient is required by U.S. Law to fill it out an d return it. I mentioned it to him and he said BS.... "this is my 'freedom of choice' not to". Can't say as I blame him.... I'd file it in #13 too.

Was it the Census form?

More than likely, they already recruited me last year fior the 2010 census. And the census is done through the Department of Commerse.

You'll be canvased if you don't send them back.

No, it was "The American Community Survey". But Census Bureau's name was in the with the Dept. of Commerce heading.

Haven't seen one here at our house yet.... and hope we don't either.

What the heck is "The American Community Survey"?

BTW: Census forms are required to be filled out by law. Now, I know some will say, "FU%$ that." LOL I am only reporting the law, as I understand it.

This said the same thing John, but it's not a Census form from what I read and understood. I imagine his is on the way to the dump as our trash was picked up early this morning, or I'd go and ask to look at it again. From the few questions I read, I'd say it's none of their damned business. To me it's "Profiling", and that's just plain wrong.

Yeah, funny that this should come up now, and I figured there would be much complaining and teeth-gnashing to follow. Seems the very document (the Constitution) that many are quick to quote when their gun rights, or whatever else, is felt to be threatened, actually requires a census to be done every 10 years... Can you imagine that?? The audacity of it all. Why should we be required to give anyone anything you might say. Well, it IS used to determine how many people go to that black hole in Washington to represent you, and if you don't comply, well, your state might just loose some of its people in Congress. Now that might not be so bad, eh?? Seems we probably have too many up there anyway... :applause:Check out this link for census information. Makes for interesting reading....

There is a minor difference between asking about one's family for a census count verses having to put your whole life story on file with the federal government.

You can ask about my family ... my sex, (or lack there of,) and/or number of members in my family and my family income ... outside of that any other information is not required for a population census.

From what I gathered this is not a Census survey. So if this happens to be planted in my mailbox, I'll plant it in the trash.

As far as I'm concerned they've no right to ask about my financial status.... As that is what he just told me it was for.

Census Department does all types of surveys, not just head counts. They do random financial analysis surveys as well.

If it is a legit request from the government, which it sounds like it is, a Field Representative with credentials (important to ask to see them) will show up on his doorstep next.
Tell him to remain calm. Remember, it's just a person doing their job.
Most of them are folks from the local community who do it as a part time job.
They'll be willing to work with him no matter what, but by law the survey needs to be completed.
It's one of the ways they know what the price of an egg was, from 1960 for example.

I've done it, it's not bad. Everything is confidential.
They just use the raw numbers to look for trends in the economy.
With the current situation, I would imagine they are taking a harder look at the numbers.

BTW, getting out of the survey is way, way harder and more time consuming than just doing the survey. :icon_lol:

And after all the data is collected, the appropriate statistical analysis is applied to come up with the most beneficial bias for political reasons.

If you're antsy about giving the government info about your finances, wait till they start digitizing health records....

If you thought health care is expensive now...

Just you wait until it's free!

As far as this fascist government we now have I am very leery of ANY info that they already have on each and every one of us let alone any future requests they will have. Marxism, Communism, Fascism and Socialism...here in America and in the very government of We the People? Fundamental change indeed!

What in the world will we tell our grandchildren when they are old enough to understand? My grandparents would be appalled and ashamed. In fact, my parents already are. This is not the country I served 35 years ago at 17 years old.

:USA-flag:

Geesh, it's not an audit. That's a different department of the government. :icon_lol:

Person has a list of prepared questions they ask.
Might ask you, "How much you make this year?"
You could say "10 bucks", and that's what they write down. 10 bucks.
"How much you pay for a gallon of milk?" ...

Really funny to me, how folks asked to do a telephone or online survey for something "free", hop right on that bandwagon with all their personal info, no second thoughts... :mixedsmi:

I seriously have got way more issues with the NSA tapping into everyone's cell phones, email, and web browsing, and scanning that for "Homeland Security reasons", than I do with someone from the Department of Commerce asking me how much I spent on a candy bar this week.

And I agree. Don't get me started on the Health Care 'plan'... :icon_lol:

Look, ultimately if it means the local school district here gets a little more federal money to purchase milk for the kid's lunch programs, because milk prices are higher here in a small town, great. I did something for my local community.
Hurrah. Yippee. :kilroy:

Hi NSA! :wavey: :icon_lol:

*Slides away from Dain*

Great dude... now the gov't comes here to look around because you said N*A. :icon_lol:
