Hospital

I've been in the hospital for almost 2 weeks and that's why I haven't been around much.

I had an accident while working at home and broke my leg and on top of that damaged one kidney. They had to remove the kidney because of the damage, there was some infection because of the surgery which I'm told is common. The infection is gone and hopefully I get to go home tomorrow( Friday ).Recovery time is 6-8 weeks.

Dr said I could do some light walking.I asked how with a broken leg?I'm not allowed to pickup anything over 10 lbs.Even without a broken leg no baths or showers allowed because it might cause infection.I can still eat what I want but it was suggested a bland diet at first. At least I should be fully recovered for the Holidays if there are no complications.
My 1 daughter is here to help as is my son.She goes to Uni on Maui and can be here whenever I need her.

And yes you can have a full life with 1 kidney.

Hello Hiede
Not the best of news.

You can have a full life with one kidney.
I have a friend who lost one over 50 years ago. He is still going strong.
Another who lost one 40 years ago and she is fine.
And these are the only ones who say that they have lost a kidney. I probably know a few people in the same situation who don't say anything.

All the best with the recovery.

Broken bones take 6-8 weeks from my experience (and I have had a few), maybe longer as you get older.

My wife broke her leg (hip joint) a couple of months ago. Pretty nasty break. (There are no good breaks)
She is slowly recovering.

Best of wishes
Stuart

All the best to you, Heide.

We see quite a few breaks at work (I do admin support at a clinic these days since I can't fly anymore), and the 6-8 weeks sounds about right. You just have to have some patience and just refuse to quit -- that's the important part. Keep on trucking!

Once you start therapy (what we do where I work) you just have to remember to take things one step at a time. Too many times people want to take on more than they are able to since they want to be "done" as quickly as possible. That's normal, but things take time. What's important is that you don't give up on the process since it can help you get back on your feet. Just be patient.

I'm not too familiar about the rest, but people do know that people have full lives with only one of a pair of organs. The last Pope, Pope Francis, just being the one that most people are familiar with. He lost one of his lungs in the 1970's, and he lived a full and normal life.

Keep us posted and, again, all the best to you.

Saludos!

That sounds like quite the accident. Terrible!

Take it slowly and recover completely. You have my best wishes for your success.

The main thing is you lived to tell about it... 2 mths will pass, till then..... just don't break anything else, you should be as good as new... even with one kidney. Keep your spirit up.

I am real sorry to hear about your accident Hiede. I had a kidney removed in Dec. 1999 (cancer) and all is fine with one. With the help of family you will be alright. Wishing you the best!

My mother was born with one kidney. She never found out really until much later in her life, like 3 years before she died. She lived to be 83.
So, life after kidney is possible. Wishing you well Heide.

Hiede, you've really been in the wars. I hope you have a speedy recovery.
All the best,
Kevin

Aloha Hiede,
Good too hear you’re on the path to recovery. Get plenty of rest mate and take care of yourself

Cheers

You are too young to be having to deal with this! :) My last broken bone was in 1960. I was a youngster. At my age I sure don't want anymore broken bones.
As others have said-listen to you health care providers and you will be ok. Best wishes and full recovery!
