• There seems to be an uptick in Political comments in recent months. Those of us who are long time members of the site know that Political and Religious content has been banned for years. Nothing has changed. Please leave all political and religious comments out of the forums.

If you recently joined the forums you were not presented with this restriction in the terms of service. This was due to a conversion error when we went from vBulletin to Xenforo. We have updated our terms of service to reflect these corrections.

Please note any post refering to a politician will be considered political even if it is intended to be humor. Our experience is these topics have a way of dividing the forums and causing deep resentment among members. It is a poison to the community. We appreciate compliance with the rules.

How I plan to act as a moderator

jmig

SOH-CM-2025
As the new Moderator of NewsaHawks, I think you deserve to know what you can expect from me as a moderator. I will try to lay out guidelines for all of us in posting here in NewsHawks. The intent is to allow discussions on the news and stay away from the politicization and emotional bickering between members.

The root word for Moderator is moderate. I believe a Moderator’s job is to ride the fence. To allow discussion but step in if the discussion starts to go downhill into character judgments. As such if everyone follows these simple guidelines, you will have no problems with threading closing or worse from me. I must state that I am not the only one who can close threads here. Von bek and any Admin can, if he or she judges the thread to be offensive, close it. However, hopefully these guidelines will remove some of the subjectivity from the judgment for everyone.

The primary tenet and rule is; do not insult anyone’s character, race, ethnicity, religious views or gender. We all have opinions. State them as opinions and not dogma. Jingoistic, chauvinistic, or dogmatic statements will lead to retaliatory responses. Such exchanges serve to only drive people away and will cause the thread to be closed.

It is easy to post things online that you would never say to someone’s face. Before hitting the Send button with an emotionally involved topic, ask yourself; Would I say this if he was standing in front of me? If the answer is no or even maybe not, edit it before sending.

Normally, exchanges warm up before bursting into flames. If I see a thread going into a direction that I think is heading for trouble, I will say something. Consider this your only warning. If the discussion continues on the same trend, it will be closed.

Posts that I deem obviously insulting to someone’s character, race or ethnicity, religious views or gender or, seem to be obvious spam or trolling will be closed.

Censoring/Editing of Posts

I will only edit a post to remove what I consider an offensive inflammatory remark or, to correct an obvious typo that could cause problems. If I ever edit a post I will PM the individual and tell him/her why.

I will also edit or censor according to the following statement posted in the Terms of Service:

Sim-Outhouse will censor any messages or materials that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-orientated, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violate any laws.

That‘s it. I hope I have provided all of us an idea what you expect from me. I promise that I will do my best to be fair and impartial. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I am on here almost every day. There are times however, when I can be offshore for work and not have internet service. I will respond to you when I am able.

Wow!

A moderator that says he's actually going to show up and do something, other than putting in a token appearance every now and again!

Good Luck to ya.

There goes the surprise. :icon_lol:

Well moderated discussions always sound like a good plan, but in brief, you'll be just another set of eyes watching over any debates, meaning I think your colleagues are already doing a fine job. ;)

Nonetheless, another pair of eyes isn't wrong at all. :jump:

You would be surprised at what the other moderators do, Snuffy. We are all in fairly constant communication concerning posts in all of the forums.

My post was not to set me apart from other moderators. It was to let everyone know what to expect from me, here. There are others who read this forum and can moderate the threads.

Be afraid Snuffy, be very afraid...........:173go1:
John has summed up the philosophy of the Outhouse 'Staff' very succinctly.

Being an administrator as well as a moderator at a forum myself, I know how hard life can get.

Good luck John, I'm sure you'll be an excellent moderator :wavey:!
