HU OT: RCAF Super Hornets

If you havent heard. Canada announced today that it will work immediately with Boeing to purchase 18 Super Hornets to fill a gap and then conduct a full up open fighter competition starting in 2017. Cool!

I predict a fifteen and a half trillion maple peso bill, thirty years of agony, 600 trillion maple peso in cost over runs, twenty seven update programs for the six flyable legacy bugs, and in 2068 the whole thing will get flushed down the crapper. Which sort of describes any military aircraft program nowadays. `Course, a gravel enema would probably be better than that sack of hammers read JSF, or, as it started out as... common (haw) affordable (HAWHAWHAWHAWHAWHAWHAWHAWHAW) light (HARHARHAR) fighter (Stop-gaspwheeze-I can`t take any more....)

On a +ve note, I like the upgrade to the Super Hornet :applause:. Are they to be new ones or cast off and refurbished US ones. Would be refreshing for us if they were new :encouragement:. The transition for existing F18 pilots will be economical. As opposed to the proposed F-35. Why they insist on committing us to an untried (and potential money pit) to me is just baffling. The powers that be have always insisted that because of our climate and hours of operation and distances travelled, we require twin engines, then they plump for this. :dizzy:

Also, sooner rather than later they better start thinking about replacing the old Snowbird Tutors imho.

I think they will be new build. I also know the new build SH for Kuwait are getting the CFT's, so there is probably a good chance the Canadian versions could get those as well. Also, hopefully they'll they'll have them wired to be transformed into EA-18G's when the new fighters come into inventory in the 2020's, in much the same track the Australians have taken.

Eighteen aircraft. One Eight. A complete waste of time money and effort. That is not enough aircraft to keep up pilot proficiency, let alone contribute any thing to any meaningful capability. On top of the money down the john thomas on the Eff-U-35. Typical liberal thinking. Eighteen aircraft.
So w can waste time, money and effort dropping the wrong kind of bombs on the obot legacy...spectacularly mush but very liberally correct thinking.
I would point out the Cyclonic money hole has still failed to replace the Seathing. Watch the rewind.

Nothing the Aussies haven't already done....
If Trump does pull the plug on the Free Trade agreement we should tell him where to stick his 35s and go 'European'...;)

Jafo,

Let's watch the political comments here, okay? I know it's an oblique reference, but...

Not a problem,Rami....I do the same policing for Stardock's sites.
The issue would be the same no matter who was to abandon the agreement....;)

Oz ended up with F111s when the UK Govt canned the TSR2, again another Govt's decision.

In terms of monetary and practical reasons, it makes more sense for Canada to go with the Super Hornet. They are already in the Hornet family and have been a long time. I expect they will simply usher in the Super Hornet in greater numbers and be done with it. Besides, it will eventually benefit from tech upgrades that are offshoots of the F-35's core technologies. The F-35B did extremely well in recent LSE's. None of the Aggressor A/C were able to draw a bead on it but the F-35's DAS/EOTS system had a field day with any target of opportunity that crossed it's sensor range both in the air and on the ground. Personally I'd like to see the F-22 production get re-opened in an MRS variant with the F-35's core systems installed in it. With that much more room in the airframe to accommodate what the F-35's smaller airframe struggles to do (which is at the root of it's biggest issues), it would be an excellent replacement for the F-15E and still retain most if not all of the F-22A's capability.

One of the most spot on comments I've read in years and years regarding the F-35 and F-22. I wish I could send you a prize....:pop4: That would be an amazing combination. Congress is supposed to be looking into reopening the F-22 line. At getting an estimate. I think Canada will most likely just buy more Super Hornets. Not sure if Kuwait can get the modernized touch displays...but those are also offered if I'm not mistaken. Boeing also has a rotary pod for Amraams if I've seen those correctly. Would make the most sense. Although, if Canada does go the Full open fighter competition that means F-15 is also on the table...and Boeing has offered the F-15 2040C variant. Which is just a missile carrier capable E model I think?

It wouldn't matter if the F-22 line was re-opened (Which the USAF doesn't actually want, as it would impede the development of the F-22's replacement they're beginning to work on now) because the F-22 will not be sold to other countries due to the technology in it.

The USAF "Fighter Mafia" over at Pentagon are already plotting the 6th Gen Fighter which IMO is a waste of time and money. They should have went with more F-22's and moved forward with a 2 Seat Strike Variant but at the time (during the 90's) cutbacks were the norm and any chance of a second strike version of the F-22 fell to the JSF program (which became the F-35). What irritates me to no end was the constant spec and timeline changes on the JSF/F-35 program which pushed the overall design parameters and original projected costs considerably further than originally intended. This (and all the bureaucratic infighting and political allocations of the budget pie) is why the F-35 is behind and over-budget. In the end, the F-35 will mature and it's bugs will be overcome and it's already showing considerable capability but I do not blame Canada nor other partner countries for looking for alternatives to the extreme expense of the F-35 program. Again, the Super Hornet will serve Canada well and we'll gladly get them up and running quickly with them. Insofar as the F-22 program being reinstated, I think it should be but in doing so the new airframes will benefit from significant improvements in integrated avionics and warfighting/electronic warfare suites for the cockpit and Pilot/WSO and the current F-22's are already in dire need of modernization of the cockpit systems/avionics as the current cockpits are late 1980's to mid 1990's technology. Another peeve I have is the Thrust Vectoring. It looks very cool doing it's thing at airshows but in reality, it's essentially a useless capability as current Air to Air Weapons with extreme high off-boresight staring focal plane IR sensors and thrust vectoring (coupled with DAS/EOTS and HMD capability) negate the need for pointing the nose on the enemy. That's not to mention that the Thrust Vectoring adds weight and wear and tear beyond the norm which in turn adds more expensive maintenance hours per flight hour. The name of the game now is sensor fusion capability coupled with such super agile weapons and gaining the edge as distant as possible long before a close-in visual merge. Some say the reliance on this level of technology is overstated and risky but I believe just the opposite, it could very well be the deciding factor as to whether a nation can defend it's skies and terra firma or quickly fall to an aggressor with equal or possibly greater capability.

Dear all,

Please consider whether this discussion really belongs here. Its a flightsimulator forum and actually this particular forum is about FSX. How correct some observations perhaps might be, this is simply not the place to discuss them.

Thanks,
Huub

Okay.....in other words, more VRS SH paints of Canada required (FSX & P3D) (To satisfy Huub's remark :very_drunk: )!!

Cheers

I guess the canadian drivers will have to fight to the death for the privilege of an hour in the cockpit. Procurement at the mumble monad is so incredibly broken that those 18 super bugs will be it for thirty years, about the length of time it will take to get those aircraft on line, if the seaking replacement fiasco is any guide. I don't even want to know what the bill is going to be (billions down the suck-hole on the F-35-wasted, patch up 35 year old legacy bugs, and what ever this boondoggle will cost) for the privilege of contributing four aircraft to operation enduring rope-a-goat. Should have bought Grippens.
Oh, yeah...fsx content. Should look at the KBT super bug conversion prospects. Is Mr. KBT still around? Been bouncing Emails with no response for nearly a year re: B-52's.

Yes, some legit repaints can be made now! Wonder if they'll adopt the twin rail amraam hardpoints attachments?
