HUD glass

Great change for the Acceleration F-18 HUD texture! I've yet to fly an airplane that you have a tough time seeing through the windscreen/cockpit glass. Also, it kind of defeats the purpose of a HUD when you can barely see through the darned thing. Don't want to sound like I'm whining, but it seems there are too many developers that think in order to make a VC more realistic, you have to include excessive reflections and add opacity to the glass. The only time I notice any internal reflections is when flying at night (due to cockpit lighting). Other than that, while there might be some subtle reflections, for the most part they're hardly noticiable. For the record, Piglet's glass textures are typically the best. He adds just a little bit of "dirtyness" to them so you can tell you're looking through glass, without adding too much distraction.

I recommend the transparent HUD texture by Enrico.

This package contains three different HUD glasses mods. It is intended for the Microsoft Acceleration F/A-18 Hornet ONLY. The purpose of this package is to give your F/A-18 a more realistic look by replacing its HUD texture. Very easy to install with my easy and detailed guide on how to do it! Choose the one that looks better to you, replace it with the original, and you're done! everything you need is inside the package. I hope you like it. Enjoy! Enrico B, January 2009.

I agree! That and the way the reflections work in his gauges and mirrors, I actually get a liitle motion sickness (that's a good thing?!!!) especially in the Mohawk and Bronco! :isadizzy:
Also, I love a certain Piglet logo reflection slipping in to view in the mirror (on the Mohawk I think!).

Finally, someone that shares my opinion!!! I can't stand VC reflections, they are so lame. Especially at night. The default MS models are HORRIBLE at night....ugh!! One can barely see the scenery!

:amen:

Listen, i finally fixed the entire acceleration f-18 hud and flight dynamics!!

i have replaced the ****ty acceleration hud, by a new realistic(pilot tested) HUD. I have also changed the flight dyamics so that it tracks straighter, just like the real thing. i have also solved the jacked wheels problem.
follow these steps:

1- http://www.simviation.com/fsxpanels2.htm download the f-18 realistic hud
2-copy all the files to ur f-18 panel folder, and copy everything tp the gauge folder(also copy everything in the folders to the gauge file.)
3-go to ur panel cfg, go to the bottom to the virtual cockpit part, and replace gauge03 by FA18_HUD!FA18_HUD, but to change the emplacement numbers. Now u should have a new hud.
4-For the stability and jacked wheels go to the fsx blue angels website, u have everything on there.

go to ur panel cfg, go to the bottom to the virtual cockpit part, and replace gauge03 by FA18_HUD!FA18_HUD, but to change the emplacement numbers. Now u should have a new hud.

Jimmy, what does this line look like after you are finished? In other words, what emplacement numbers do you use? BTW, the author of this new gauge is Scott Printz, who did the HUD for Aerosoft's F-16.

Any chance of a screenshot of this improved HUD? I already changed the glass a while back but would be interested in seeing what your conversion looks like.

I just tried this with Dino's Tomcat. Dropped the folder into the Tomcat's panel folder and edited panel.cfg as follows:

//--------------------------------------------------------
[Vcockpit01]
Background_color=1,1,1
size_mm=512,512

visible=1
pixel_size=512,512
texture=$vc

;1 = left DDI
;2 = right DDI
;3 = center DDI

; gauge00=fa-18!MFD, 20,35,460,445, 4 NOSCANLINES
gauge00=FA18_HUD_VC!FA18_HUD_VC, 20,35,460,445

// If we were keeping the original gauges proportion, the final number whould be 506

What I like right away is the AOA bracket, because it's more precise than the AOA indexer, and because its square in the center of my view. But the gauge also includes a command heading marker, a steering arrow, an energy caret, and ACLS tadpole. Oh yes, and a clock.

Nice topic on the HUD. and especially in the default F-18 in FSX.

It very much improves the Hornets.

I have one other issue with the Hornets; from DVC view the leading edge extensions seem to miss (at least they have a gap). Anyone else with that problem (it's on both the basic and the D version).
If i have that solved i would fly the Hornet more often.

Wasn't the default FSX F-18 ext. and int. models built by different dev's?
Who didn't compare notes?!?

P.S. Thanks for the kind words on my glasswork!:ernae: I like just a bit of "dirt/used plexi" to suggest that you are looking thru a transparent surface, that even new, is not perfectly transparent.
Always liked how armor glass ages in the warbirds flying today.

OK guys, I am confused. Are we talking about TWO different HUD packages here or is Jimmy's HUD the same as DaveKDEN's OP?
