I-7 920 for FSX

Hi guys need a new computer, best i can afford is the I-7 920
mhz will this run my FSX well, or perhaps better than the quad cores ect

If you can team it up with equal quality components it will sing. My Q9550 is O/C to 3.4 Ghz and FSX is as smooth as silk.

Somebody around here has one that is O/C to 4.2 Ghz. I can only imagine how well FSX must run on that rig.

Hi Andy and welcome to SOH....it would be better for you to post what you are going to be putting in your system, then we would be able to give ya better suggestion...Mike
 
my personal opinion is that an i7 920 is no better speed wise then the Q9650. the i7 will end up costing more $$$$ both can be clocked up to freeken unreal speeds. but the 920 is not much better then the Q9650 and with the Q9650 you can get off with DDR2 1066 RAM and the # of good mobos is just as high but there an little cheaper. thats my opinion anyway

i7-920 2.66 ghz 1mbl2=8mb shared l3 cache with qpi
8gigs ram
2.0 tera 7200 rpm sata drive
1 gig ati radeon hd 4650

I just checked on the instructions that came with my EVGA X58 motherboard and it does have 6 slots for ram and special instructions which sound like you can indeed have 8 gigs or any other multiple of 2 or 3...
 
yes you can have 8 or 4 etc, but you want true tri-channel setup with the x58 motherboards, thats why if going with ddr3 you want 3 stick of ram

So, what's the down side of having 8 instead of 6 GB? To use "true tri-channel setup", would I have to go down to 6, or up to 9?

Tri channel is recommended for Core i7 setups on certain X58 boards

In a meeting between Legit Reviews and Intel it was discovered that three slots should be used if you want the best performance. If you pop in a fourth module and occupy all the slots the DX58SO motherboard won't be running in quad-channel. It will actually default back down to single channel mode, which will obviously drastically impact memory bandwidth. The official support memory clock speed is 1066MHz, but Intel was quick to say that 1333MHz, 1600MHz and even 2000MHz memory kits will work on the platform.

For the X58 boards you'll need a matched set of DDR3 memory in 3GB,6GB or 12GB kit form. This is essential if you want to run in Tri Channel mode.
