I am so stupid

Hi Hurricane,

Don't go worrying about it (finding the file) if fs is running ok now.
When you next add a scenery area via the main user screen scenery library menu, the scenery.cfg file will regenerate in your main fs9 folder;
it will use the scenery.dat file (also in the main fs9 folder) to reconstruct the scenery.cfg

Likewise, if you can't find an area you've added, go back to the main user screen scenery library menu see if its listed, if not repeat the add to library process; now with Win7; its' slightly different, in as much as once you've added the particular area, you have to click in the vacant space to add scenery item; most of us are so used to doing it we forget not everyone knows!

There's a guide around somewhere with screenshots.. hang on I'll be back.. here you go its a video; using FSX but the process is same

http://youtu.be/C8kO1IsJMuE

The spare scenery.cfg seems to be a windows7-ism; don't know why it puts a copy there; just does.
The fs9.cfg in same location though is your actual working one.

Ps; Hope you weren't too badly affected by the storm; my cousin and family live in Arlington Va; (Washington DC area) haven't heard from her since Monday night.

I've already added scenery

I've already added scenery so I know how to do that.I also know how to turn on and off UAC. what got me in trouble and still might is adding things like Bill Lyons Cub for free or anything with a self installer.I guess I'am not sure how ,because the second time I tried to put it in I couldn't remember if I should run, extract all or run. When I used extract all then browsed to the FS9 root folder it wouldn't go in and I tried to put the scenery in manually which messed up everything.
I got an error message at startup saying it couldn't find scenery in area such and such.
So I uninstalled and wasn't going to reinstall but as stressed and upset as I was, I thought ,it's just a simulator ,I'll try again. This time when I put in Cub for Free I used run and kept getting messages wether I wanted to save ,over right or what ever ,don't remember now, so I just kept going with I think the top one and it went in.
So how do use a selfinstaller, should be simple ,but of course not for me as they give you different choices and I thought extract all should do it but it doesn't.

Extract All = decompress function of a zipped file. It creates a folder possibly with sub folders. These must then be moved/copied to the same folders within the actual FS folder.

For example an aircraft once extracted would have that aircraft folder containing a model, panel, sound and at least one texture folder.
That main folder in including all sub folders gets copied into the AIRCRAFT folder of FS.

Sometimes there may be other folders that do not belong into the AIRCRAFT folder that are created along with the folder containing the aircraft files.
The folder names indicate into which FS folder these files belong.

Most common is a folder Effects if that aircraft has its own unique effect files and textures.
The contents of that effects folder therefor need to be copied/moved into the FS\effects folder.

IF the creator of the auto extract is trustworthy you could simply point the EXE to the FS folder and it will place all files into the right place.
Most of us, me included don't like that option because I don't trust anyone that much ;)

It really depends on the particular addon how to proceed. My general advice is to always point to a temp location, then compare the created file structure to the real one in FS for clues what needs to go where.

Cheers

Ah righto; know what you mean now... some files (Bill Lyons' creations are one of them) overwrite certain sound and effects
files; the installer asks something like "Do you wish to overwrite ...protected file?"

Anyhow, glad you're back with us.

The scenery.cfg file does not generate when you lose it or delete it.

On a windows 7 machine the scenery.cfg will be in several locations.

The root folder of FS9 normally C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9

Your user folder C:\Users\{your user name}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FS9

And another place that is not well documented C:\Users\{your user name}\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9

If you have deleted it from any of those locations FS9 will fail to start.

To correct this issue simply copy the file from where it is and paste it in the folder it is missing.

If you are completely missing the scenery.cfg file here is the default text in the file.

//----------------------------------- copy this text to a blank text document and name it scenery.cfg

oh man this is getting old

All the questions I mean, things don't seem to work as people say. If I click extract all all it does is open the FS9 root folder, instead of installing the plane and flights ect.No offence Sunny but for some reason things don't run like they should for me. I'll give it another shot. Also I wish I'd got an ATI gard instead of Navidia ,Navidia sets profiles that you can't change unless you use Navidia inspector wich works sometimes and doesn't others.
Always something.

two questions

Ok you guys gotta be sick of me by now ,but two things ,when putting in a self installer, hitting" extract all" does nothing, hitting run put Bill Lyons Goose and flights right in.Go figure. Second the scenery config text that Dangerous Dave gave me is exactly the same as the config file I put in application data from Disk one.Again go figure.
I want to once again thank everyone for being patent with me and all your help. I never had this much trouble with XP ,but all you guys have gone above and beyond what you have to do.Your all my dear friends and I don't know what I'd do without you.

That's sort of what I tried to explain. Each developer can, to some extent, configure what a "installer exe" does.
And that is also is why I never let any of them run directly into my FS installation. I want to know what happens and what files get replaced or overwritten.

I would venture a guess that when you hit extract all in this case a folder with the same name as the exe is created, likely in the same directory the exe is currently located, and the files extracted into that folder. In the sim you would not see any change at all in this case because none of the files are in the correct place yet.

The big key is to understand the overall file structure of FS and use that as the guide for all manual installations.

Cheers
Stefan

I can sort of answer this....Oh, Stefan did already !!
As he says, it depends on what software is used to make the installer, there are several free .exe makers out there in the internet world, some have all those buttons by default, some do not, and it depends on whom made the .exe what buttons he/she decided to activate during the compilation process; its a matter of (usually) checking or unchecking boxes in a dialog menu at the time the .exe is made.

I want to once again thank everyone for being patent with me and all your help. I never had this much trouble with XP ,but all you guys have gone above and beyond what you have to do.Your all my dear friends and I don't know what I'd do without you.

Glad to help; if it helps, I have fs9 running on Win7 from an external HD; and on my travelling laptop, its on Vista;
the laptop don't like running the external HD (not enough power thru the USB)
