I broke free from the Razor Game

OBIO

Retired SOH Admin
You guys who are slaves to the morning shave will know all about this: You find a razor that you absolutely love only to find that the replacement cartridges are no longer available because the company has introduced a new razor and wants to force you to spend a zillion dollars for their newest 75 blade, lubricating, AM/FM, 4-wheel disc brake, GPS guided offering. And they love forcing you to spend a half a zillion dollars for 4 refill cartridges.

Well, that was the situation I faced recently. I could no longer find refill cartridges for my Schick Extreme, the most comfortable shaving razor I had ever used. I looked and looked and found none of them available. I made that last cartridge last forever it seemed...I shaved with it until the blades had basically been worn away.

I refused to pay a zillion dollars for the latest greatest razor....I don't need an AM/FM radio or a Blue Tooth navigation system during my morning shave. I bought some cheap disposable razors....and they were horrible.

Then, during our most recent trip to Walmart, I was forced to take a trip down the shaving isle. And there I found my escape from the Razor Game.

The Wilkinson Sword Tech 3. A triple blade razor with a nice arched handle. Came with 2 blade cartridges. $5. A pack of 4 refill cartridges....$5.

I bought just the razor package....did not want to buy refills until I knew how the razor would perform. And perform it does! I have shaved with the Wilkinson Sword Tech 3 a dozen times so far and I love the closeness, the smoothness, the control that I get from this razor. The handle is shaped just right to get to those stubborn hairs on my neck and along the jaw line.

If you are looking for a new razor, give the Wilkinson Sword Tech 3 a try. It's a boat load cheaper than anything offered by Gillette or Schick, does not come loaded with gadgets that have nothing to do with a manly shave, and will give you the results you are after.

And it's made by Wilkinson Sword...makers of fine military swords and knives since 3 days after the creation of the universe...or something like that.

Wilkinson and Schick are now the same.
The Tech 3 is fine for for mowing the field.........but I prefer the Schick ST2 for trimming the garden.

There is another answer OBIO. Do what I did in 1982 and grow a beard! I have never regretted it once in all that time. Once a month I take a beard trimmer to it and hack it back to about 1/4" long and in between I trim my 'tache with a small pair of scissors to stop me 'filter feeding'.

At the time I grew it I was having to shave twice a day. I was working as a Technical Sales Rep and if I didn't shave in the morning I had a 'golden glow' by 5 p.m. (I had gingery blonde hair at the time but a true ginger beard) and my first wife used to complain if I went to bed with the stubble so I would have to shave again before bed. I also had a big problem with ingrowing beard hairs that would turn into boils and pimples and I would have to dig them out with a needle and a pair of tweezers. Once I grew the beard that problem disappeared overnight.

I’ve been using the same Gillette Mach 2 handles (I have 2) since the mid-late 90’s. I went on eBay and bought about a zillion cartridges for around 10 or 15 bucks and when I shave - and that’s definitely not every day - that’s what I shave with. I’ve worn some combination of beard/mustache since I was able to grow one. Who knows what tomorrow will bring. PS I figured out early on that I REALLY look like [more of] a dufus when clean shaven. Hope this new rig works out for you, OBIO

I broke free from the razor game too... I just don't shave. I finally got a job that allows facial hair, so I used that as an excuse to activate bear-mode.

I'm a Mach 3 user...every second day. My wife likes the rough n' ready look! :d

I avoid the temptation to buy the cartridges off ebay as there are soooo many fakes online that'll leave you looking like you received a slap about the face from Freddy Krueger after using them!

Here's a tip I picked up that works.

Razors don't dull. They sometimes chip... but usually they accumulate rust and soap along the edge. You can prolong the life of a cartridge by a good rinsing, blow the excess water from the blades, and pat with a dry spot on the towel. Then put it in a dry place... like a dresser in the bedroom, rather than in the damp bathroom.

The cartridge will last a lot longer.

My favorite shaver was actually a Norelco rechargable. I had it for 20 years, and never had to replace a thing. One day the battery died, and I never got around to replacing the shaver... been using cartridges for a few years now.

Hey Tim....

Have you thought of going Hair-free-laser-treatment...
affordable.... you may need maybe a few trips then you are hair free...
Just a thought, so your morning trip to razor land ends...

To a tee KD, use the same razor and shave every other day. Costly, but I use the Mach 3 Turbo blades.

I tried growing a beard in the late 70s, my facial hair is just too scruffy, my beard would never grow even, plus I look funny with a head full of blond hair and a damn red beard like a Scotsman! :>).

"Way back when", Gillette came out with the TRAC II, which did the job just peachy, for me. Here in Canada, the blades are still available under the Gillette brand for a bunch of bucks.

But at a Canadian grocery chain called Superstore, they sell replacement TRAC II blades under their house brand, "Exact", which cost just a fraction of what the Gillette ones do, and they do a superior job, to boot.

I always did wonder about the constant addition of yet another blade to a simple razor. What are they up to now -- Five? Silly buggers!

[Btw: in case you're wondering about the photo, that's only a healthy-sized goatee; I still have to shave the neck and sides.]

Now THAT is funny!!!!!!!!!!! How DO you shave, Luckydog???

Me?

I have been shaving with the disposable BIC shavers (orange ones) since I was a teenager. Nowadays, I shave while in the shower, and have one of those suction cup mirrors on the shower wall. No need for shaving cream, as the steam/water from the shower works even better. Try it, you might like it!!! Of course it means a longer shower, but I LOVE showers!

My comment to that suggestion is OW! I have a real aversion to pain!!!

I went for sideburns and a goatee not too long ago. Not the worst decision, since it takes away a few strokes with my electric razor every morning.

Counterbalance to that is the weekly chest, belly and armpit shave.

Some years back, I got tired of the daily shave, so I took a vacation from shaving. Was supposed to be a 2 week vacation...it turned into a 4 and a half year vacation. My beard looked great, I looked better with a beard (it covered half my face...so I was only half as ugly). I treated my beard just like the hair on my head. Nightly shampoo and conditioning, kept it brushed and trimmed. It was a good looking beard...hard to keep shaped up though...and that is what did the beard in. I was trimming it up and lining along the jaw line and messed up. I had to take the beard off. A few years later, when Deb wanted me to grow a beard to see what I looked like in a beard...my once soft, black beard had become half gray...and those darn gray hairs wanted to stick out straight all the time. The beard looked terrible and went away. Maybe in a few years when my entire beard has turned white, I'll grow another one.

Here's a tip I picked up that works.

Another tip: Keep your razors away from your better half/Girlfriend/wife/She who must be obeyed etc.

They will use them to shave their legs (But will never admit it) and the next day you shave your face ... :mixedsmi: it will get bloody!

I tell you what. I used to dread buying replacement cartriges myself as I used to get them from Wal-Mart. Even then they were rediculously expensive. I get the cartridges now for Sam's Club/BJ's for about $37 for a 4 pack (16 blades total). That is about the best deal I have found. I need to have a smooth shave since I am in the military, and it grows out fast. That new 4 bladed razor does a pretty decent job though. I only found out about it because for some reason Sam's Club sent me a free sample in the mail. I was using a 3 bladed razor at the time, and since using the 4 bladed one I can't go back. Guess it only will get worse as I get older, but I highly recommend Sam's Club/BJ's Wholesale if you have them near you. Not to mention they are good for getting a decent supply of your favorite snacks and foods.
