....although I am slightly ashamed to admit it, I taxied a plane for the first time today... I got to start up and then taxi down the apron to the B-17 hanger... ran it up just a bit, checked mags, then shut 'er down.... Then my brother taxied it back down. Was really neat to implement things from FS into real life.

What is there to be ashamed of for taxiing a plane for the first time? I have never taxi'd a plane, have never flown a plane. The only time I have ever flown in a plane I was so young that I have absolutely no memory of it...I was maybe 4 or 5 years old. The last time I was in a plane was the 2002 Freedom Festival 4th of July Celebration at Mansfield Lahm Memorial (KMFD)...at that plane was sitting on the ground, with the rear cargo ramp down so visitors could walk into the plane and look at the cockpit.

:ernae: You gotta start somewhere... What I'd be ashamed of, is getting your pilots license before your driving license, but spending the last 30+ years driving. ENJOY

Nice Tri-Pacer. It would be nice to get a fixer upper and restore it. Well, it would be nicer to get one fully restored. I love the ole Tail dragger version of the Pacer. Classics man!! Classics.. 140 Knots cruise!

Pshaw Witt, you'll be there in no time flat. And you're so young. I got interested as a teen in the CAP, but I was in my early thirties before I could afford flight training. Go for it, you're there. You really have a head start with Flight Sim. No kidding, because of flight sim, I I am still not rusty flying a real plane. Just remember, think responsibly all the time, there are "no" mistakes in flying. Especially landing. But use your Flight Sim senses, aim for that sweet spot on the runway, throttle down and flaps as you would in Flight Sim. But in Flight Sim, it is all visual and stick feel, in real time, it is all visual and physical with real rudder pedals in lieu of a twist stick, feel the plane like you feel your car.

You're there young Jedi, feel the force.

Witt, I see no embarrassment fodder whatsoever! Way cool that you got a chance to 'drive'.
Heck, my first shot at taxiing a plane was a few years ago in Dad's Thorp, and I'm 45 now. :d
The only thing I have not done yet is land the plane...and I am at a point where I really need to figure out a way to fund getting my ticket so that I can fly our planes at will!
 
It is a quaint little Piper indeed... The story behind the plane is that it sat in a hanger at the airport for over a decade but the owner began to not keep up with his rental fees... After a few years of not paying, and not returning any phone calls, the airport manager asked my dad & his class to move it out of there... Now he has it for his class to learn on. He is currently trying to get the registration turned over to the school...

I said I was ashamed because, unfortunately, I've never been at the controls of any airplane ever... I guess it's just a little weird being as involved with aviation as I have been, that I have done that....

Back to the plane though, after a few "look-er-overs"... the plane runs fairly smoothly for not having been run since '92.... My dad does not have his PP license, but he is a licensed ground school instructor!

Maybe I can convince my brother to take flight trainnig with me in the future...

I haven't had the opportunity to do that since I worked for the FBO at KMSS back in 1969. It is a good feeling tho. Especially when you get to do it all by yourself. Looking forward to hearing you make that step too.
 
Oddly enough, when I started working on my PP License, I would have loved to do nothing but taxi the plane for a while.

Getting through the "steer with your feet" phase was a little difficult.

However, as my CFI pointed out....MONEY!!

It cost bucks to turn that prop. The best use of those bucks was in the air.

I picked up the taxi skills on the way from the air and to the air.
