I have an airfile question...

Hey guys,

Is there a limit to how many fuel tanks are recognized by CFS2?

The DamBusters Lancaster variants are great aircraft, but are range-challenged because not all of the fuel tanks drain as they should. I know this aircraft is overloaded with respect to its actual capacity, but the range is needed for some missions.

With these aircraft, the fuel tanks are labelled as the following...(I added a drop tank for the airfile which does work...)

AirEd entry 531 Fuel CFS/FS 2000 Center 1 (785 gallons) (Tank #1)
AirEd entry 532 Fuel CFS/FS 2000 Center 2 (785 gallons) (Tank #2)
AirEd entry 525 Fuel CFS/FS 2000 Left Tank (500 gallons) (Tank #3)
AirEd entry 526 Fuel CFS/FS 2000 Right Tank (500 gallons) (Tank #4)
AirEd entry 527 Fuel CFS/FS 2000 Left Aux Tank (370 gallons) (Tank #5)
AirEd entry 528 Fuel CFS/FS 2000 Right Aux Tank (370 gallons) (Tank #6)
AirEd entry 529 Fuel CFS/FS 2000 Left Tip Tank (90 gallons) (Tank #7)
AirEd entry 530 Fuel CFS/FS 2000 Right Tip Tank (90 gallons) (Tank #8)

The last two tanks are not draining, and I need to know why. The corresponding picture shows which two tanks are not draining.

Do I need to add corresponding "drop tank" entries in the .dp file?

Rami, i don't see a tank selection switch in your pic. What are you using to manually select the tip tanks over the others?

Bearcat,

The DamBusters Lanc panel does not come with a tank selector switch, perhaps that is part of the problem. Where do I find one for eight tanks?

Bearcat,

I tried adding the gauge to the panel, but it didn't seem to make a difference. Those tanks are still not draining. :mixedsmi:

Hi Rami,

Here is some info I got somewhere. Maybe it will help.

Here are the TANK ID'S displayed by the dump tank gauge and the corresponding air file section number for each tank:
"Ctr 1" = section 531 - Center Tank 1
"Wng L" = section 525 - Left Wing Tank
"Wng R" = section 526 - Right Wing Tank
"Aux L" = section 527 - Left Aux Tank
"Aux R" = section 528 - Right Aux Tank
"Tip L" = section 529 - Left Tip Tank
"Tip R" = section 530 - Right Tip Tank
"Ctr 2" = section 532 - Center Tank 2
"Ctr 3" = section 533 - Center Tank 3

Fuel tank usage in CFS 2 with Auto Fuel Management turned ON:
The fuel tanks are organized into two groups of tanks: center tanks and wing tanks. Fuel is burned from both groups simultaneously; i.e., if there is fuel in a center tank and fuel in a wing tank, then fuel is drawn from both tanks containing fuel.
In addition, the wing tanks are paired. All fuel from both wing tanks in a pair is burned before fuel is burned from the next pair.
In the center tank group, fuel is burned first from Center Tank 3, then Center Tank 2, and last from Center Tank 1.
In the wing tank group, fuel is burned first from the Left and Right Aux Tanks, then from the Left and Right Wing Tanks.
If Auto Fuel Management is turned on, fuel in the Tip Tanks will not be used.

Maybe this last line is the problem.

Regards,
B24Guy

TheB24Guy,

I've tried that too, I just can't get those darn outer tanks to drain. :banghead:

Bearcat,

Thanks, that worked. That was a classic moment of not being able to see the forest for the trees. :icon_lol:

You can couple them. Center one and Center 2 can be numbered 1 at the airfile entry. Left wing and Right wing tanks can be numbered 2. Auxiliar Left and Right tanks could be numbered 3, wing tip right and left, 4. In that manner tanks work together. Moparmike has a terrific tank management gauge that I included in the Alpha Mirage IV plane.

Cheers

Rami,

I just happened to stumble in here and see this.

The tip tank sections are non-functional in both FS2000 and CFS2. You can define them and add fuel to them, but they do not get used even if you manually select them.

That is a bug that didn't get fixed until FS2002.

Mike,

Thanks, I ended up adding the fuel load to the bigger tanks, and it solved the problem. :icon29:

For some reason, I believe that Bill Potvin's fuel dump gauge was still able to able to add/remove fuel from those two tank sections even though the engine wouldn't use it.
A few guys that built gliders for FS2000 & CFS2 used that "bug" for gliders to simulate a water ballast dump system.
