There seems to be an up tick in Political commentary in recent months. Those of us who are long time members of the site we know that Political and Religious content has been banned for years. Nothing has changed. Please leave all political and religiours commentary out of the fourms.

There's an ol' country saying where I come from that when we depart for the gate, all of the pets we had loved in out past will meet us at "The rainbow bridge" and lead us to the kingdom. I like that thought and I prefer to let the mystery be.

My sympathies, Chief. Each pet has their own personality, and I still miss the loss of Mikey from this Summer, she was such a unassuming sweet little soul.
I want to thank God for allowing all of us to have such wonderful little critters come into our lives, and touch us so deeply. And I'm glad you got to spend time here on Earth with your little Frannie.

Hi all,
Navychief the advice given here to go and look at those animals in need is a good advice.
As I said earlier we have lost several of our cats this year.Plus one of our rescued Greyhound Hector.We are animal loving household so are never without.
With Jeremiah and Mischief dieing and Angelus disappearing(We have a large number of foxes and badgers near bye)this year we finally went and got another kitten called Casper.
We also got another rescued Greyhound called Harry.
Our house is known as the Arc by our friends because of the number of animals we have.
Currently we have:
3 dogs,2 Westies(Sooty and Sweep) and a Greyhound called Harry.
5 cats,Casper,Charlotte,Jasmine,Sacha and Poppy.When we first moved to this house 3 years ago we had 10 cats,But old age has taken most of them.
3 rabbits,A giant French lop called Fleur and 2 Dwarf Norwegian Lops called Bill and Ben.
5 goldfish in the pond.It was originally 8 but the local Heron managed to sneak in and get 3.
Plus 2 tortoises.
I love the idea of the Rainbow Bridge.
On a very sad note I urge any one who wants a pet dog please take a look at Greyhounds.They make wonderful and loving pets.Of all the dog breeds they are the most awfully abused.I do not know about America but in the UK 1000's of healthy Greyhounds are killed every year because they may not be doing so well on the track or may have picked up an injury.If they are not killed they are abandoned,Often having their ears cut off.Racing Greyhounds have identifying tattoos in their ears that make them traceable.
Harry our new Greyhound is a dog in point.Harry is a 7 year old dog.He had spent the last 3-4 years locked up in a small shed with another dog.When the owners decided they had had enough of him they took him and the other dog to the local vets to be destroyed.Fortunately for Harry the vet refused to destroy healthy dogs and took them both off the owner.They were subsequently passed on to Greyhounds In Need.Who have re homed both dogs.Harry with us and the other dog with another couple.

I have 4 dogs, a Greyhound, Beagle, Border Collie and just got a Doberman pup 15 weeks old. I also have two cats and a parakeet and the loss of any of our animals would be traumatic.

Buddha, I love Greyhounds too. When I was on Guam with the Navy, I volunteered for the animal shelter on the island (1993-94). They often had a few Greyhounds in the shelter, and were the most loving creatures I'd ever been around. They too had been abused, but when I could get close enough to them, they craved attention, and would just sit there and stare into my eyes when petting them. Such sweet dogs. I would never ever volunteer on the days they would be doing euthanasia. I couldn't bear the sight of one of them being led to their death. When I came back to work a couple days later, I'd convince myself that all of them had been adopted. It was the only way I could handle it. I know the idea of a 100% "no kill" shelter is not realistic. There are simply some areas where so many animals just will not get homes, and the population of dogs/cats just gets out of hand. But it doesn't mean I like the idea of ANY dog/cat being put down. Unless of course it is dangerous, diseased, etc.....
Anyway, my Rottweiler "Chief" is my best buddy. I was a middle child, brought up with two sisters. Get the picture? It was not fun at all!!!

Best Friends
Hey everyone - been a long time, and I had no idea there were so many fellow animal lovers around here! I second all of the sentiments expressed so far in this thread - my wife and I have our little "Boxer Boy" Buster Brown (11), Chloe the Aussie (12), 3 kitty Cats and one "Puppy cat" (2-13), a Sun Conure, Senegal Parrot, and a Cockatiel. They are all truly members of our family, and we love each of them dearly, and spoil each of them rotten. Coincidentally, I was the middle child between 2 sisters too! Losing one of our furry/feathered friends is just devastating, but better to have loved and lost, etc. and more importantly, better to have given these little guys a safe and loving home to live out their days - who could ask for more?
There is a large scale no-kill animal sanctuary called "Best Friends" in southern Utah. We have been supporters and fans of theirs for years. Just recently, they have a new series on the National Geographic Channel about Best Friends. They are a wonderful organization that does so much good for animals. Recently, they took in a number of Michael Vick's dogs, and are showing the world that even these poor abused pit bulls are by nature wonderful, sweet and noble creatures when treated with kindness and decency. They take in every kind of animal that needs a home - Dogs, Cats, Birds, horses, pigs- you name it. Even ones who can never be pets for whatever physical or behavioral reason. They take care of them for the rest of their days, and help them to live in safety, comfort, and dignity. Many of the animals get adopted out to loving homes.
Best Friends lives off of donations, and they are my favorite charity, along with the local humane society. My wife and I are the ones who take the local strays to get spayed and neutered, shots, necessary surgeries, etc... For birthdays, etc, any more, my wife and I just say "make a donation to Best Friends". Because these little guys are just that. http://www.bestfriends.org/

We've got 3 minature pinschers, 5 cats, a dozen lizards, a blue jay and two horses here at our zoo. The horses are the most recent additions as Mrs Willy and our youngest daughter decided to start riding. Mrs Willy is an old hand at it and is teaching our daughter.

Willy I know the feeling about the horse's.My wife had 2 until about 4 years ago.She had an Arab called Max( Proper name if I remeber right was maximilian sulan royale ), and an Irish Cob called Jake.They were her horses but inevitably ended up mucking out and being general gofer/dogsbody.
Unfortunately jake became severely lame.His Navicular bone had disintergrated on his right of front hoof.He was in pain and could barely walk.She had to have him shot.I have never seen my wife look so devestated as of that day.She was so upset that she said she could not go through that again.She sold Max to a friend.

They will not go quietly, the pets who've shared our lives.
In subtle ways they let us know their spirit still survives.
Old habits still can make us think we hear them at the door
Or step back when we drop a tasty morsel on the floor.
Our feet still go around the place the food dish use to be,
And, sometimes, coming home at night, we miss them terribly.
And although time may bring new friends and a new food dish to fill,
That one place in our hearts belongs to them.... and always will.

That poem you posted brought tears to my eyes in record time!
I had to take our 10 month old Chihuahua to the vet today...her ears have been bothering her. They are all pink inside, she shakes her head and scratches at her ears. The vet ruled out infection and said she has the cleanest ears he has seen on a dog in quite a while. He asked if there had been a change in her diet....she has been on Purina Puppy Chow since she was 6 weeks old. He thinks that as she is full grown at 7.1 pounds that the milk additive in the puppy chow is causing her some allergy issues. So, need to get her off the puppy chow and onto some adult food. Hopefully that will clear up her allergies....as the vet did not like the idea of putting Hazel on steroids due to her young age and small size (if 7 pounds can be considered small for a Chihuahua...none of which is fat...very stocky and very muscular build on this little girl.)
No problem, other than I just bought a new 20 pound bag of puppy chow less than a week ago and it is sitting in the corner of the kitchen unopened. We keep the dog food in a large plastic bone shaped storage thingie, and it is still 1/4 full...which is plenty to begin mixing the new adult food into to prevent belly issues over the food change.
So what to do with an unopened 20 pound bag of puppy chow? Can't take it back to the store as I don't have the receipt. And it was only $11, so that is not big loss. It will be donated to a no-kill dog shelter that is on the same street as the vet clinic. They get in a lot of abandoned dogs, and sometimes those dogs come with puppies or have puppies while in the shelter. I am sure they will put that 20 pound bag of food to good use. While at the clinic, I made a small donation to the shelter....the clinic has a jar on the front desk for donations to help fund the shelter. Wish it could have been more, but every dollar helps.

I have a quick Question for you since you are into Wild Criters, Seem to have some Stray Wild Cats that we have been feeding now for almost a month, we cannot get near them and the Weather is turning, Wife and I are both a Little worried about the cold and other factors that may harm them.
Seems they sure are spooky when we try to approach them, they bail off the deck. we cannot get close enough to catch them. What is the best way to capture them and hand them over to the Animal Rescue Shelter or should we just let them come out and catch them ??

About all I can offer, advise-wise, is to keep trying what you are doing to catch the cats. They are apparently feral, which makes it more difficult. If they have been someone's pets, by now they should have been easier to approach. If your local humane society/pet shelter will come catch them, then perhaps that is the way to go.
Good luck. I understand how frustrating it is to want to provide shelter for an animal that won't let you near it!
