I Survived Allmenroder

So there I was, tail-end Charlie of 20 Squadron's "safe" patrol way behind our lines. Head due north from Clairmarais to the coast and come back, nothing to it, even if it still was Bloody April. But as our Fees bumbled along, what should come screaming down out of the sky but the whole red circus! On the fuselages, one had a wood front half and a red rear half, one was red all over, and others were all red except for white, yellow, green, or blue elevators.

Things went downhill rapidly. My observer got some hits on the green-tailed one has he flashed by ahead aiming at one of my squaddies, and then our kite was a tumbling mass of flames. On the way down, I took a look back with the labels to see who'd got me and it was Allmenroder. From 1400 feet, according to the replay! My rear gun hadn't even started tracking him, he was so far away. Don't mess with aces, especially in a Fee :).

Somehow, I survived the crash with only 20 days in the hospital. The box score was 2 for them and 1 for us. I don't know who the dead German was, but he was obviously somebody important. I survived, as did the other Fee pilot shot down, but he was hurt worse than me so is still in the quack shack. So I count this as a successful engagement :).

Is that all you got, Allmenroder? I'll get you next time and we'll see who lives and who dies!

Yep,

Any time you see a couple of those really colorful and flamboyantly painted aircraft dive out of the pack, you know you're gonna' be in for a rough ride. Still blows me out of the water (or should I say "sky") that all those characters are present. It's not a matter of will they show up.....just a matter of when. I must admit, it's just one of several things that keeps me going back for more.

Thanks for sharing.
