• There seems to be an uptick in Political comments in recent months. Those of us who are long time members of the site know that Political and Religious content has been banned for years. Nothing has changed. Please leave all political and religious comments out of the forums.

If you recently joined the forums you were not presented with this restriction in the terms of service. This was due to a conversion error when we went from vBulletin to Xenforo. We have updated our terms of service to reflect these corrections.

Please note any post refering to a politician will be considered political even if it is intended to be humor. Our experience is these topics have a way of dividing the forums and causing deep resentment among members. It is a poison to the community. We appreciate compliance with the rules.

The CERN accelerator has probably found the "God Particle"
This is one of the biggest scientific discoveries - ever.

What I like about the whole thing is how a bunch of physicists convinced politicians to give them funding squillions to look for something no-one understands.

And also in a time when everyone is an expert in anything from nuclear power to Kim Kardashion's wardrobe, it's refreshing to be able to regain a little awe and wonder at the Universe around us.

i bet there's plenty of awe and wonder in certain items of kim kardashian's wardrobe :icon_lol:

And it was all done so Stephen Hawking could lose yet another $100 bet he made... :icon_lol:

Jokes started appearing on Twitter during the announcement itself. The presentation slides showcasing one the greatest discoveries in history used the Comic Sans font—a cardinal sin for many.

:icon_eek:A #Higgs Boson walks into a bar, down in the mouth. The Barman says "What's the matter?, and the Boson says "I Am"

:wiggle: A Higgs Boson walks into a bar and asks everyone to take part in an act of penitence. "What are you doing?" asks the barman. "Giving mass."

 A Higgs-Boson walks into a bar. The bartender says "You know, there were some guys in here looking for you."

A Higgs Boson walks into a bar...

Barman; "What will it be?"
Boson; "Just tell me!"
Barman; "???"
Boson; "Everyone says I'm too predictable!"

We can't see the now famous Boson, it simply doesn't live long enough to be observed. But a 3D CGI of an "event" caught by the CMS detector will give you a rough idea;

The two approaching thin blue lines represent packets of protons hurling towards each other at near light speed. Most protons misses (the blue "blotches") but at least two collides, liberating sub-particles that are taking different trajectories according to their masses, their electromagnetic charges, their spins, and so on...

The two straight dotted lines terminated by a thick tip represent two photons, which are the expected "remains" of a decaying Higgs Boson, forming sort of a "signature".

We are like Blue Bottom Baboons trying to contemplate a Lap Top Computer.....Our brains are not yet fully developed,we cannot even see the full light spectrum, we are like the 7 blind men trying to describe an elephant. all correct, all wrong! Like Baboons, our life span too, is but a Mini Sec in cosmic time. We are that at the whim of Mother Earth and Nature. In One Second ,a Big Rock could spoil yer whole day...Then the next life form will ask the same questions....in Some Sort of a eternal De Ja Vu Game...over and over,ad Infinitive We are inquisitive ,and can learn..as witnessed here,However mankind has a way to go....Like a Neanderthal looking at the sea, club in hand, and the surf,we look at the stars and the Heavens, seeing whats not there no more! Looking at Billions of years ago..Yesteryear,and not tomorrow!!,...Some time from now,if we do not blow ourselves up...Who knows,Things and questions may come to us!...Meanwhile Be Happy Don't Worry ,Be Happy,Its OK Don't Worry Be Happy!. Lets keep our Gods,Myths, and Heroes,..And Be Thankful for what you do not know!<label for="rb_iconid_24">
