I was over on FlightSim.com this morning and found this announcement:

Plan-G Announcement

</center> Stunning New Free VFR Flight Planner For FSX And FS2004.
UK based TA Software has released the most exciting freeware add-on for Flight Simulator enthusiasts for a long time. Targeting the VFR and GA pilot, it is easy to use, packed with features, fully configurable, and remarkably - entirely FREE!
Called Plan-G, it uses the acclaimed and versatile Google Maps mapping tool. Any geographical feature which exists in Google Maps can be included in your flight plans, and all the features of Google Maps are fully available. Overlaid on the Google Map are the necessary navigation features extracted from FS - controlled airspace, airports, navaids, VRPs, etc., with automatic switching at lower zoom levels to avoid clutter.
Plan-G runs outside FS as a web-style application using its own inbuilt Internet Explorer browser. It requires only an internet connection to function, and installation could not be simpler.
Flight Plans can be reversed, with text-based or graphical creation and editing. Waypoints can be added, amended and deleted and track lines dragged to new waypoints with the mouse. Flights can be saved in FS2004 or FSX format and existing flight plans created in FS itself can be imported, displayed and modified as required.
User defined waypoints can be created "on the fly" as you build a plan, and stored in an internal database or imported from external databases.
Plan-G can be connected to FS2004 or FSX so you can see your aircraft moving across the map as you fly, with the option to also display aircraft instrumentation, heading, altitude, distance to run, course deviation, etc. as you fly. AI aircraft or other aircraft in a multiplayer session within a configurable range may also be displayed. Flight trails can be recorded, weather data can be imported from FS to help calculate headings and leg times.

I've tried it ( in FS9) and although it still has a few bugs/issues/gaps it seems to be a pretty good product.... and it's FREEWARE!
You have to register on the forum before you can download it, but installation was easy and quick (read the read-me), it started right up and worked fine on a 1 hour, multi-point flightplan

That looks very interesting. I just registered, waiting for my e-mail. I hope it lets you install to a computer that doesn't have FS installed, like Super Flight Planner.

Paul it should have no problem installing to the non FS computer but you will have to make the path to your FS Program a shared path until you build the database.

Then you will need FS Wide to connect to it while in flight on the other PC.

Once you install the program it prompts you to build the database. The database should be defined in the options menu before you try and build the database.

Looking like a good flight planner program. In some ways already better than FS9's FS Nav.

It works best if you are using two monitors. You can move it to your second monitor and see it while flying other wise you have tab out of FSX look a G-Plan and then tab back to FSX. I don't have two monitors so I only use it to plan flights and I do not use it when flying.

Man, this is pretty cool.

I figured out to run it through my network without FS Wide by creating a simconnect file for it, and am quite impressed. I'll still use Voyager to create my U.S./Canadian flights (exported to FSX), and will use it primarity as I have my procedural charts included, but will probably open this up to take a peek during my next flight. And a neat tool when flying abroad beyond my Voyager programs reach. Do wish it displayed intersections as well, and low and high altitude routes. If it does, I missed it while setting it up.

Bravo to Tim Arnot for created this amazing freeware.

I'm sure to check it out tomorrow further.

This is awesome! I installed it to my FS computer and generated the FSX and FS9 databases, then copied the whole folder to my other computer, which doesn't have FS installed, but I use it to make flight plans. Once the databases are made, it works fine on the other computer. And of course with the one installed on the FS machine, it will connect and show you your position, and AI planes too.

Woohoo! Just what I've missed and wanted for the past 2 years. Can't wait to test it when I get home:icon29::wiggle:

thanks for the HU

That's really good to hear that it can be done that way. I would prefer to run that on my laptop instead. :kilroy:

I can't connect to FSX. It seemed to download and install okay, but when I hit connect (FSX already running), it says thay it 'generated an exception'. I wonder if there is some other software I need to install.

Looks great if I can get it to work.

colihamp,

Since you're already registered on the tasoftware forum, drop them a note. Tim's good about getting answers out on a timely basis. He may want to know the steps you took do make notes.

Also

Read the manual in the Plan-G folder.

Specifically Chapter 9.2 and 9.3. Those two chapters cover connecting to FSX via FSUIPC and SimConnect.

They should set you straight.

Thanks guys,

Yeah Prob90 it's just me trying to run before I can walk. I'm having a look through the manual now. I suspect it's a Simconnect config issue of some sort.

Wow. Flying from Lebanon Muni to Elizabeth City, watching both Voyager and Plan-G.

Plan-G is a really really great tool, and love how you can utilize the hybrid map tool on the way.

This is indeed a winner.

As far as simconnect issues, Tim did a great job with the instructions included, the link between my second computer, and my FSX computer via my network is working flawlessly.

Bravo.

Perhaps in the future, intersections and airways could be added, but for right now, this is worth every penny......which was zero. Good God, simmers are very nice to each other.:applause:

Nope, have spent the past 90 minutes trying to figure it out, including creating a new SimConnect.xml file as per the instructions in the manual - just not working. I've posted on the TA forum.

I'm sure I'm in the minority with these issues.

Yep, been using it for quite a while now and I like it a lot. I purchased Flightsim Commander a long time ago, have it still installed and update it whenever a new version is available, but I use this one instead.
