I'm looking for a plane...

Hey all,
I got the idea for a cross-country trek but I'm kind of stumped as to what I should fly. You see it involves flying from Jenison MI (08C) to a field about 10 miles east of Petersburg WV (W99). Granted the airport there can handle just about anything I care to fly, but getting a plane that can make the 386nm flight in a couple hours and able to land on a grass field normally reserved for sailplanes and ultralights? That's a real head scratcher. The field is part of Bill Lyon's Pietenpol/Stinson scenery package. At first I thought flying a motorglider there would be fun but let's face it; they are not the fastest things around and I'm not entirely sure my Scheibe has the legs for such a trip.
So here's what I'm looking for...Fast plane (cruise around 200kts) and able to land in rough or unprepared areas (like a Super Cub but way faster). Any ideas or suggestions?

BTW I'm not a good helo pilot so choppers are out, as are modern military aircraft like Harriers and Ospreys.

Y'know that might work...is there a freeware one out there? I have an RV-4 and an RV-3 as well. Might have to practice some touch-and-goes.:running:

I can't recall their cruising speed, but Steven Grant has a nice set of Aviat Huskies (Float, Tundra and Normal) and Rans S-7s (Float, Tundra and Normal wheeled) that are all nice fliers, nice VCs. FLightsim.com has them...just do a search for Steven Grant.

Brain Gladden has a Zenair CH 801 that is great for short and rough field use. Again I can't remember the cruise speed of the plane.

Pshaw now Doc, ya tellin' me ya can't land the AH F3F on a grass field? :icon_lol:

I'll have to vid that for you and show you how easy it is.

That thing is a monster though, don't know if it would carry you that far on its fuel load if you use real settings. But it butt-ugly quick!

There is a vans_rv8.zip at lightsim.com

Most of the other STOL aircraft don't have the cruising speed required. My first thought was a Pilatus PC6 Turbo Porter, but even that only cruises around 120kts

Another suggestion is the Rutan Vari-eze and Long-eze which cruise at 185 mph

Sudden inspiration, especially if you want something a little older there is the Spartan Executive which cruises at a very respectable 215mph and is available at

Built by one of the maesto's of the FS world, Milton Shupe and team

Wanna get there REALLY fast? Wanna land in about 1500' and have room left? Have I got the plane for you!

FS2004 Stratojet Excalibur. The Excalibur from Stratojet is a fictive supersonic business jet. After the retirement of the Concorde it is the only available civil supersonic aircraft. The Excalibur can fly at Mach 1.6 over a long range and is cabable to take-off and land on very short runways. Includes dynamic virtual cockpit, five liveries, reflective textures, opening door, full moving parts, panel with custom gauges, custom sound. By Eugene Heyart. (Previous version had 7156 downloads.)

It's less than 9 NM from KGSO to W88, but I was able to get up to mach .75 before I had to slam on the (air)brakes! After a touchdown speed of only 90 KIAS you can haul her to a stop so quick your passengers will be a big greasy mash behind the aft cockpit bulkhead! Yeah, it's pure fiction, but it's fun!

If you want something a little closer to real, there's always this:

FS2004 Stratojet Merlin. The Merlin from Stratojet is a fictive "warbird" powered by two turbocharged 2000 hp Allison V-1710 V12 engines. The Merlin is very fast, has excellent maneuverability and is easy to fly too. Includes dynamic virtual cockpit, six liveries, reflective textures, opening canopy and engine bay doors, full moving parts, panel with many custom gauges. Sounds by David C. Copley recorded from a real Allison V-1710 V12 engine. Aircraft by Eugene Heyart. (Previous version had 3097 downloads.)

It's not STOL, but it's quick and can use just about any GA runway over 1500'. It also has about a 90 knot minimum touchdown speed, but the brakes are mre realistic and there's no thrust reverse, so rollout is just about what you'd expect for something that size.

Either the Veneavions Rockwell- Commander 690 or the TBM 700 are 270kts(ish) and with prop reverse can easily handle short, rough strips.
All the bells and whistles, cabin class so you can take friends and a bar to carry the celebratory champagne

Some great choices listed above.

I can suggest the following from my stable:

DeHavilland Dash 7 cruise 210 land in land in rough terrain<2000'
Aero Commander 500 or 680S cruise 200 land in <2000'
Spartan Executive 7W cruise 200 land in <2500'
Howard 500 cruise 260 land in <3000' (requires familiarity and experience)
Beechcraft D18S cruise 200 land in land in rough terrain <2000'
Beechcraft XA38 cruise 350mph at alt, land in rough terrain <2000

All these cruises are allowable high throttle fast cruise, not econo cruise.

Well, you have mentionned the Soviet Cub, that is the An-12, and I was just about to suggest that exact plane :/

What else ?... Hmm maybe the An-26. The Dash-7 mentionned above would be a very excellent choice as well. Perhaps the OV-1 Mohawk from Piglet might do the job too.

DeHavilland Caribou. 180+ kts, landing speed 65 kts plus reverser. AND you can bring your friends, some mopeds, and food for a week.
Perhaps the more stylish Twin Otter?
