wow much nicer then I was led to believe.
I was in a ww2 american "uss silver sides" in muskegon michigan and the german one pictured above is a lot nicer.
 
While a lot of great restoration work has been done on U-995, there are a lot of niceties that have been added, I don't know if it was for the museums purposes or during it's years in the Norwegian Navy. Certainly that great lighting is a benefit of the museum! In my opinion the American fleet boats were much nicer from a habitation point of view, they had to be since they had some brutally long transits and on station times. I don't envy anyone who served on the subs of the time, what ever the nation.
 
Toured the USS Pampanito in San Francisco several times when I lived in San Ramon. That sub seem pretty roomy. Crews mess was particularly nice. Still wouldn't want to serve on one of those. I figured if I had to die in war it would be on good ol' terra firma

It really shows what a museum can do if properly funded.
 
I think the Norwegians improved the habitability of the U-995 quite a bit while it was in service with their navy. The interior of the U-505 in Chicago is a lot more spartan. Both ships have been preserved real well. I've been through the 505 twice and except for the holes in the hull to accommodate the tour groups :biggrin-new: she looks like she could make a patrol tomorrow.
