Hi everyone .
This is a problem I suffer with a lot . I am using FSX Steam at present Can someone tell me how I can install Aircraft designed to work in FSX I know it does work but I seem to have files all over my Steam folders which tell me where I should be placing files Sometimes they work and more often than not they dont the problem seems to be the Number of FSX files I appear to have two Files here both called FSX each called Sim objects, Airplanes , and Rotorcraft , I am a bit confused as to which folder I need to put the aircraft in for them to work correctly . I hope I have explained my problem properly
Many Thanks
Peter

Check your root path to your Steam FSX install. Everyone installs Steam and it's addons to custom locations meaning your location won't be the same as anyone else's location UNLESS you absolutely went with the default location i.e. C: Program Files (x86) etc. which is the worst place to put it.

My Steam files are all stored on my M2 SSD drive and my path is as follows: E:\Steam\steamapps\common\FSX

This means that I either have to point an automated installer to the above address (although most should find the location automatically after reading the relevant registry entry) or if I am manually installing an aircraft from a bunch of downloaded folders in a zip file I would have to the copy/paste the new files into the existing file structure.

If it's the simplest type of install where everything is contained in a single aircraft folder then you should copy the new aircraft folder into your existing 'YOUR DRIVE\Steam\steamapps\common\FSX\SimObjects\Airplanes' folder (or 'Rotorcraft' folder for helicopters).

If it's a more complex situation with multiple folders involved just copy and paste the contents of those folders into the corresponding folders on your FSX:SE install. i.e. ............

The contents of the new aircraft 'effects' folder go into your 'Steam\steamapps\common\FSX\effects' folder.
The contents of the new aircraft 'gauges' folder go into your 'Steam\steamapps\common\FSX\gauges' folder.
The contents of the new aircraft folder go into your Steam\steamapps\common\FSX\SimObjects\Airplanes' folder.
The contents of the new aircraft 'sounds' folder go into your 'Steam\steamapps\common\FSX\sounds' folder.

You should have only ONE LOCATION for your FSX:SE installation NOT TWO.

You will need to find the wrong location and check what files you need to transfer from that location's 'effects', 'gauges', 'SimObjects' and 'sounds' folders as a minimum and copy and paste them into your 'good' location's matching folders. When you have copied over all the required files from the wrong location to the good location you can delete the wrong folder for the install completely.

The easiest way to do this is to copy the entire contents of a folder (i.e. 'gauges') from the wrong location and paste them into the good location and if you get a pop-up warning of duplicate files you can select either 'ignore' or 'replace' as you like so that you get just the files you need and not the ones you don't.

There is a lot of information above and if you don't understand anything let me know, it's not as difficult as it looks in text but you need to make sure you just have one location for your FSX:SE install and then delete the wrong one.

Hi
Thank you for this. It all makes sense But does it mean I have to have a partition or can I just create a New Folder on C drive and copy Steam into that ? and then remove it from the current location ?

It's been a while since I have done it but
A) You don't need a dedicated partition
B) You can't just create an new folder and copy FSX-SE. You can create the folder and then you need to go into the Steam app and move your FSX-SE installation from within the app.

FSX has the great advantage that you might create sub-folders for the airplanes. These folders have just to be activiated in FSX.cfg with according entries. Besides the default airplanes sub-folder, I run five others with aircraft of different eras. And this with FSX-SE as well.
