Install FSX after FSX-SE already on PC?

I would like to get the boxed version on my PC and give DX 10 a try. FSX-SE is already installed with all add-ons.
There is a clean hard drive available. Will this create problems or will both versions work independently?
Thanks for any advice.

It will probably confuse 3rd party add-on installers, but with SE on its own drive with its own corresponding registry entries I don't see why you can't have both installed at the same time. My question is - why?! I can understand going boxed to get around having to use Steam but not just to use DX10, which works just the same in SE as it does on Acceleration. I'm sorry if I misunderstood the question or your intentions :)

No no !! FSX Steam, if installed on a computer where FSX Original never existed, will use the same registry keys as FSX Original.
FSX Steam will only use specific regitry keys if FSX original is or has already been installed on that same computer.
So, if you install FSX Original on the computer were you installed FSX Steam, there are great chances to run into trouble.
At least that's my understanding.

Besides, why would you want to install FSX original if you already have FSX Steam ?

Additionally, if you were thinking of testing the DX10 mode, it is also available in FSX Steam, just like the regular FSX.
And if instead you were speaking of the DX10 Scenery Fixer addon, I believe it also works with FSX Steam.
So you don't need to waste your time with the original FSX ;)

I have FSX installed on two different drives and Steam on a third. The only issues encountered are when installing 3rd party scenery where the installer does not allow you to choose which drive to install to. Other than that I've had no problems. FSX shares many files between it's two installs. Steam has it's own set of files. As a developer of FDEs I can tell you that aircraft behave differently in FSX and Steam when using the same set of FDE files. Particularly when it comes to seaplanes and amphibians.

So, Neal, there you go - some say you can, some say you can't. At least the one thing everyone agrees on is there's no need to do this just to try DX10 :)

Daube is correct 100%. There are hidden (and essential) folders which FSXSE will take up and use if FSX boxed is not on the system. If it is on the system FSXSE will create its own similar but different files.

DON'T DO IT

Thank you all for the advice and information. I will leave things as they are and get on with trying DX-10.
Regards and thanks again
