International Registration Guidelines

OBIO

Retired SOH Admin
I need some input from those who know more about international aviation than I do.

As a skinner, I have always given planes US style registration numbers. This is not because I live in the US and wish to shun the rest of the aviation world....but because I am ignorant of the guidelines for registration systems used in other nations. Willy filled me in on the UK style of registration (G- followed by four letters). What are the registration guidelines for other countries? France, Greece, Italy, Australia, South Africa, Cuba, Japan....

If you know the guidelines for any nation, no matter how small, please post them here so I can amass a library of registration guidelines and can begin representing the world of aviation with my skins.

Thanks.

Well, as for Japan, it always begins JA, this is followed by four numbers, or 3 numbers and one letter, or two numbers and two letters. Some have hyphens, but usually I see it all together (i.e. JA1234, JA123A, JA12AB).

For Russia, it is RA-, followed by 5 digits. State-owned aircraft are registered as RF- or FLA RF- (Federation of Light Aircraft, usually seen on GA, never airliners) some exceptions, sometimes written FLARF, FLA RF, RF, or ФЛА РФ. Some aircraft are registered with a letter replacing the last digit. For USSR, simply replace RA with CCCP.

For the other nations, I usually use the guidelines on Wikipedia to aid me. I don't know how accurate it is, but it seems like it's a pretty reliable list.

OBIO, just to chuck a spanner into the works, some interntional codes have changed over the years. For example Canada used to have the prefix CF- and now uses just C-. Pre war Germany used D- plus four numbers, like D-1234 but now uses letters after the D- (D-ASDE) :kilroy:
