IRIS AudioworX F-16 sound-pack for FSX released!

Smudge

Charter Member
The IRIS AudioworX F-16 sound-pack for FSX is our very first sound-pack release for Microsoft Flight Simulator X.

Designed and developed for the upcoming IRIS Pro Series F-16D, this product has been tested in various other freeware and commercial military jets including the Aerosoft F-16.

This product features all new sounds recorded from the interior and exterior of the Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon, along with custom sounds for the VMS or ‘Bitching Betty’ which have been developed for incorporation with the GPWS and various other warning sounds such as over-speed warnings and stall warnings.

All in all, we are very happy with the end result of this product and we’re confident that you will enjoy the new audio experience that this sound-pack brings to your favourite military aircraft, be it the F-16 Fighting Falcon or any other single engine military jet!

Please visit the IRIS store for more information or a view of the promotional video.. :)

(This is my first attempt at a soundpack, so I'd be interested in feedback, positive or negative is fine.. :) )

Awesome vid, Smudge. I love the sound change when the engine comes out of burner.... This is going on my "must-have-when-my-wife-turns-me-loose-with-the-plastic" list.:guinness::medals::icon29::applause:

Smudge is that F16 in the vid the upcoming IRIS release ?

well done for the sounds :applause:

And will the soundpack be included in the upcoming F-16D?
Definately gonna get that one so if included in the F-16D there is no need to purchase the sound as well for the Aerosoft Falcon.:icon29:

Good use of YouTube: the customer doesn't have to guess what he's getting, or infer it from a verbal description.

The exterior engine spool up sounds are excellent, as is the thrust from the afterburner as its turned to face you. The fly bys really show that off. Seems to be a lot of interior airframe wind noise relative to the other interior sounds, almost sounds open cockpit, but never having had the please of lying in a fast jet I`ve no idea if that`s how it should be.

All in all a very nice package.

Gosh, that intake sound is so utterly unmistakable. I used to hear these babies take off 3 at a time at Eielson, and that sound brought back a LOT of memories.

I would also like to know if this will be included in the upcoming F-16D release. If it is, will it be able to be transfered to the Aerosoft F-16 too or would we have to purchase it seperately? Has anybody tried this on the Aerosoft bird yet?

I took a 1 hr shake down ride in block c some 20 years ago.
We did a 45 degree simulated bombing dive from 15 grand getting up to almost 500 indicated with the throttle pulled back. You can feel the air and hear it but its blended in and not isolated like what I hear on the video. Its not a peacefull pleasant sound. Its a streamlined plane so most wind resistance I heard was from the canopy and its a consistant airflow sound that just gets louder with speed. No fluctuations or whistles. I would replace the current wind sound with some background generic white noise that gets louder with speed. I have a Pyramat gaming chair that does a great job of simulating the vibrations of aircraft. The 16 isnt loud inside but there are alot of things going on at once so its a mesh of noise. To do it exactly including breathing, would be muted and annoying.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uG-FpEa8UQ&feature=related This is the waterfall wind sound. Go about 1/2 way through the vid.

This is what I would have expected, more like the noise from a powerful waterfall, constant relative to the amount flowing. It's quite a mix in the video of airflow over the canopy, engine rumble and that annoying breathing sound which I'm sure your brain would cancel out for the most part as it does with most things you generate yourself.

To be totally honest.....
All I could hear was my heart racing and a tiny voice in my head screaming, "Dont puke".
That and me making sounds of a mix of giving birth and those after a night of all you can eat fiery hot mexican burritoes.

Do you think you can put together a sound set of that to complement the Iris Sound Package :icon_lol: :isadizzy:

Of course the wind sound is just one element, easily changed as you've already suggested, the quality of this sound set remains outstanding.

I have saved up gigs of sound files from fs9 and fsx over the years. I usually just tweek them or replace the entire sound file.
My biggest peeve and most changed are the touchdown "chirps" which I replace with a thump. The nose touch down I add a rattle. Most gear sounds are to loud. Ground rolls I like some rattle and squeaking. The only ones I changeg on the Aerosoft 16 are the ground roll,l,r and center touchdown.
I rarely pay any attention to external sounds but the Iris one sounds good. I live right in the middle of Falcon Country with Shaw AFB and Mcentire ANG nearby. Seems every other pilot I know flew or flies 16s.On the Iris I would just change out the wind sound and experiment with ones simular to the video. Just copy the sound file as a backup, rename the sound in the sound.cfg file to one you want to try and play with the volume. Just play with the sounds cause in the end its all just a brief suspension of reality.
Also if you have a creative labs card such as the Audigy or simular, you can change the entire sound enviroment. EAX you can create the illusion of being in a auditorium, cave, add reverb, depth ect which adds to the illusion. Or order the sound chair like mine, crank it up and you cannot even read the guages. The old warbird radials are really cool. Rattle the fillings in your teeth!

Thanks for the feedback guys...all much apprecaited and a good source of notes for further packs.. :)

The Soundpack WILL be included as part of the IRIS F-16D, but may feature slight additions which are unique to the IRIS model and wouldn't translate well to other products without a fair bit of fiddling around.

As for the wind sound, this was something we discussed in team a fair bit. Finally the video below was brought to my attention, along with the high speed pass at about 8 minutes in, the pilot pulls out of a loop into a high speed pass and high G turn. You'll notice the significant increase of wind noise as he gains speed, along with the significant drop in volume as the speed bleeds off in the turn.

All in all, it's a good video anyway, and was the reference material we used when deciding on the wind volume.

Hope that makes clear my mindset.. ;)

A super bit of flying by the Dutch Display pilot.

Listening to this video and then again the Iris product video, the wind sound is a little too whistlely like the wind over a wire compared to the Dutch video has a constant ambient rattle sound, more like an old kettle just before it boils, more turbulent I suppose. The big changes come with high angle of attack generally with added power when it the sound of a car jet wash effect overlaid the ambient rattle. I'd guess he went through a little bit of rainfall towards the end, when you can hear the loud impact sounds against the canopy.

....... Hope that makes clear my mindset.. ;)

I appreciate your thoughts and explanation on this David, sound is such an important thing to the immersion level that is often overlooked or too difficult to get right with limited sources and game engine limitations. on the other hand an entirely accurate sound that is too painful to live with can ruin an otherwise great experience.

It's a definite sale for me then, can't wait to get my hands on her. :guinness:

I will be interested in this nice sound pack only if and when I can get the D models.

That's fair enough Yago9, the soundpack however is compatible for many other single engine jets, not just the F-16.

There are plenty of people out there who don't necessarily want to get the IRIS F-16D, but would like some cool sounds for their aircraft of choice anyway.. :)
