IRIS Twin Star_"Deal or a Dud"?

I asked this in the sticky, but it got lost in the pages and I want to make this purchase quickly if I'm going to at all. The reviews have been less than stellar, with some calling it "less than freeware quality". Knowing David's abilities I find that hard to believe, but I'm not parting with any money any more without some idea of what I'm actually getting beyond some screen shots.

So what's the consensus? Is this a worthy purchase or not?:salute:

I havn't even got it and I know that the 'not as good as freeware' comments will be absolute crap.

Lookds like the FDE's need some work but that's hardly a big problem.

Don't forget one of the other developers is doing one as well. FSD is it? I can't remember, but you might want to have a look at that one if you're going back and forth over whether to buy it. It's not out yet either way.

Ed,

I had to fly it again for a quick refresher. I don't know if "dud" is the right word. Graphically, its pretty close to stunning on the outside. It does take a performance hit, but its not real terrible. If has a "quick start" switch like their F-16 if you want to get off the ground quickly. I say this next admitting I haven't read the book. The flight model needs some work. The Yaw axis is all over the place. It's hard to keep in on the runway on takeoff even with differential power, and even airborne, it's a hand full. Airspeed on final is critical. It will float for about a week if you are too fast. There may be some power settings that work better than what I was doing.

I really hope someone disagrees because I would like to like it.

Glenn

Why should a small GA aircraft get bad frame rates? They can't have as many polys as say, a similarly detailed 747.

My suggestion is this. Make a poll and have the selections be anonymous. There are many lurkers and those who don't want to give a negative review in public.

20 minutes in Gmax and you'll laugh at yourself for saying that :salute: VC, perhaps. Exterior, no, especially on this kind of plane. I think the designer of the twin star must have lost his ruler on the day he planned the bodywork.

Draw calls is what it's all about in FSX anyway. You have to go a bit mental with polys to get significant frame rate impacts.

Which is why I get irritated when some well know companies publish renders as screenshots or work in progress shots. They just chuck on a high level subdivide (taking the model from 50,000 polys to 400,000 polys or something stupid (which would knacker your frame rates in the sim), then pass it off as WIP.

Never mind.

Regarding drawcalls get this program by Arno from FSDeveloper (that man's a legend in my opinion)

http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10953

The program is called DrawCallMonitor and allows you to load an aircraft model and will report the drawcalls and polygon count of the model.

I got it last week and have been having a look at the various models I have. Makes for some interesting comparisons.

I get excellent performance in the DA42, and do not really notice any performance hit while using it. It is pretty close to the default aircraft with regards to performance for me.

I am really enjoying the aircraft. Enough so that I have passed on the Carenado Bonanza for the time being. I wanted a good long range GA aircraft for fun flights around the country that offers an excellet visual model, has solid gauge refresh rates, and is not a big hit to the wallet...and I found it in the Iris DA42. Does the FDE need some work? I guess so, from what I have read, but I have never flown a real one so whether it is completely accurate or not is up to everybody else.

Would I buy it again? Yes.

Ok, I went with the IRIS. . .Looking at the Eaglesoft offering, especially the VC, without actually having a model to look at on the sim, they're both gonna be pretty much the same, it is the same airplane after all. Would the Eaglesoft VC be more detailed? Maybe, they do nice work, but overall, I just didn't see enough of a difference to sway me.

Both aircraft have the same engine and if I was going to be moved one way or the other it would have been the powerplant, but no difference there either.

Price, at least for me, plays into it big time and while I know Eaglesoft hasn't yet set a price for theirs, the current discount on the IRIS version just couldn't be ignored.

Ok, first impressions:
Geeze I love that engine sound, lol
I didn't have any problems on takeoff, steered straight as an arrow (I have a twist grip). After take off, flaps up, trim to straight and level flight. . .again, no problem.
Appeared to be very smooth in flight, but I had very little wind to contend with and that would make a difference.

I flew from Goodwood to Bembridge, setup for the straight in approach, dropped the speed to 90kts, lowered flaps (full) and gears and slowly descended and let the airspeed bleed off to 85kts at TD. As everyone else has noted already. . ."where's the brakes"? lol Braking is almost nonexistent so needless to say, on that rwy, I went a tad bit over, lol.

Taxied back to the rwy and took off for a short hop to Sandown. Landed there at 80kts and tried throwing a rope around another aircraft tied down close to the rwy to slow down. . .not much help there either, lol.

Took off again and flew straight back to Goodwood and touched down on the numbers at 75kts and I was able to slow down enough to taxi off the rwy just before becoming part of the days race event, lol. Yep, I am really curious as to whether or not the brakes are actually that inefficient.

Overall, in the air, the TwinStar is a real sweet ride. . .did I mention I love the engine sounds? lol. Something I considered while I was flying about the UK is that everyone has their realism settings tweaked a bit different, and while that doesn't have anything to do with the braking, it may have a lot to do with the "in-flight" quirks that some see and others don't. I don't have my settings maxed out, but they are all to the right of top dead center, so I am getting enough realism that the plane isn't just flying itself.

I like the airplane, glad I made the purchase and I hope that the brake question is remedied or at least answered at some point when David has time to breathe again, lol. Thanks to everyone who put in their two cents as well.!!:salute:

I'll probably go with Iris unless ES's price is competitive. I don't think that'll be the case though.

If on a budget, by all means go with Iris. Our DA42 price point will be similar to our Cirrus Series.
I purchased the Iris Version in order to support their effort and to personally evaluate and compare what we offer to what Iris offers.
I must say their sound set is very close to what we already have.
The FDE and G1000 are quite different as is the model and texture set.:mixedsmi:

Hi

I bought it as I was coming from Abacus

I still think it is very much OK just I would have expected a IRIS made custom G1000 rather then close to stock
Although its a kind of waste of money(Abacus-Iris-ES) I will look in the ES too
The FDE is the worst thing of the package(still far better then Abacus) but I corrected a bit it by myself(Better but not too good ,did not invest enough time ,for example what is the real airfoil profile?) and I am fine with this so far

Sadly its reduced my FPS to about 12 with external view so i just dont fly it any more. Otherwise its a good product.

12 FPS is still more than flyable tho surely? I get between 6 and 10 FPS on my system and it trolls along ok... Not fantastic compared to others I see post here but its more than flyable.

Not sure whyt the frame hits...I'm not getting much of one on my rig.

As to the plane, I love it. Will I get the ES bird...most likely I will yes. I love this plane in real life and won't mind carrying two in my hanger.

Where is the quick start button?

The fps hasn't been a problem for me really, It runs in the low 20's and I have sliders almost maxed. I hear people slamming the FDE, but personally I don't see that, I know we bought the same airplane, so I'm not sure why people see a big problem. It tracks nicely on take off, once clear of the rwy, a bit of nose-up trim keeps it on a nice track to altitude. Once there, I can trim it to fly straight and level. Doesn't sound like an FDE that's out of wack to me.:salute:

.... is an interesting and very diplomatic way of putting it .... <GRIN>.
Hi Francois. Well I said I purchased for my personal evaluation not public evaluation.
That is something I believe all developers understand.:mixedsmi:
