Is Microsoft building a new fs dev-team ?

Just stumbled over this:

http://simflight.com/2009/02/06/is-microsoft-building-a-new-fs-dev-team/

MS currently also has an open position for a software dev engineer:

https://careers.microsoft.com/JobDetails.aspx?ss=&pg=0&so=&rw=1&jid=14542&jlang=EN

At first I thought wow, they're continuing after all, but then again when I read "new broad-attraction flight-oriented game on the PC" , that sounds more like arcade than like simulator to me.

I still carry a faint hope that MS course of action was a strategic one, toward FS11 ( "Flight Sim LIVE" ??? ) and further. It would be unbelievably dumb to discontinue this age-old and well established product.

Cheers,
Mark

This is fairly old news. There are a few guys here with connections to ACES veterans. Essentially, Microsoft is building some sort of flight software based on Windows Live. Many ex-ACES are in on it. Considering that they started from scratch last year, it'll be a long time before we here from it again. Nothing about this product is guaranteed, and it may not even have the MSFS title. It's probably a whole new franchise.

Further, some of us participated in a demographic study about what we wanted in flight software for the future. Ideas as wacky as being sparrows chasing hawks away from nests were suggested. Very little aircraft simulation was suggested.

What is "Windows Live?" Is this part of their new "Cloud Computing" Mantra? It sounds to me like they probably want a "subscription based" flight sim, so instead of buying it once, you get to buy it every month! But you get free upgrades! ;)

Bah. I'm not interested in that crap.

There is a very real and likely chance that will happen. Unless this sim is just absolutely perfect, I'll be counted out as well.

There was a press release that used all kinds of corporate buzzwords saying that there would be a new title that would "synergize" with other Live titles.........hmmmph.

We're all so resistant to change. I hope they do what's right.

Windows Live is a bankrupt concept. The only possible positive move would be to return to supporting the existing Flight Sim series with a new and updated title. Anyone with any knowledge of both the sim series and the potentials of solidly supported titles will understand and support this...the techno glitz of the cloud concept and trying to continually chase some ephemeral "super" net subscription concept is dead in the water and should be abaondoned. Unfortunatetly i think that it is just another buzz word concept to make waves in the board room, and has no value whatsoever for real future development.

this kind of sillyness has hit many forms of publishing, not just sim development, and until the reality of economics really hits home, ie what we as the using public are willing to pay for and support reaches the real powers that be, there will be a hiatus. But i remain hopeful that common sense and inteligence will prevail.

In the meantime good designers and teams continue to make some really great additions to the existing and valid FS titles, from all stages of the development.

If FSX-Box is a big success then I wonder how many of the developers we know and love would jump ship :mixedsmi:

I think that the LIVE concept also involved controlling addons in the same style as Iphone Apps.

Well, someone at MS is getting the wrong info or i´m in a different ball game, if they think WE are making money (or should i say SERIOUS money) they are dead wrong, and IMHO, is what stands behind that "addon control" crap MS has been playing with (in fact, we had MS 1st addon, it´s called acceleration)...just give it a thought..you complain for 40+ addons? wait till you see pricing if this "clever" concept gets into reality..

I've heard and read about this rumor. FSX-Live. If my comment makes a difference, I won't be a part of it

Why can't they copy steam?

Why can't all the high-tech companies stop forcing is into things we don't want.:icon_lol:

Any other platform besides a free standing, non hooked up PC will leave me out and back to Flying my Supercub and chasing my lady about the house.....

Perhaps they are envious of the control that Apple has over their system and applications. I looked at Apple recently for a new laptop, as I do a lot of serious photo/graphics work. A close inspection of their any color so long as it's ours attitude and price/feature/marketing strategy left me cold. A thousand extra bux for a little more memory and HD space is rediculous.

As frustrating as the PC system is many times, it's not just "for the rest of us". Are we too small a segment now to be viable for the big guys?

It's not a rumor. It's a 99% chance, as verified by microsoft, that any upcoming flight title will be joined at the hip with windows live. Hopefully your comment will make a difference. They really don't care what we think though.

Thats about as far from the truth as anything I have read on this forum ever.

Care to elaborate? Microsoft is a business, not a charity. If any company can dominate a market, you can expect to see them making the decisions they know we'll have to follow instead of giving us whatever we want. That's the nature of things.
