Joysticks and Throttles

Joysticks

I guess another factor to consider is exactly what you think you're going to be doing. If your only doing fsX, then you really dont need anything rugged.

If all you plan to do is mp, then you should consider stepping up alot.

I mean, lets face it, if your in "quick combat", and your heart is pumping hard then maybe the joystick isn't your biggest problem.....

Forgive a newbie question, but what is the difference between a HOTAS joystick and a "regular" one? I just learned that HOTAS stands for "Hands On Throttle And Stick" but not sure what that means. My regular stick is hands on, unless I get the A/C trimmed out to fly on it's own (not an option with OFF I've found!).

HOTAS means that you don't take your hands away from throttle and stick while flying because every important function is programmed on them. So you do not need to reach out for your keyboard and are able to operate your controls blindly.

Okay, thanks for the explanation. They must have a ton o' buttons on them to do everything on the keyboard!:jump:

In fact they have about 20 buttons and 4-way-switches but they can be programmed logically: depending on the combination of buttons they have different functions.

There are real masters of logical programming: for example I am using some programs for the HOTAS Cougar made by a guy called 'Don Ulfonso'. They are very well thought out and use heavy logical programming. For example the IL-2 setup makes use of the speed brake automatically when you cut your engine power down to less than 10%. Another example: during taxiing and take-off you press a certain button and when you move your rudder to the left the left wheel brake will get used, rudder to the right the right wheel brake will be used. So you do not need to buy rudder pedals with extra wheel brake. Makes sense.

I'm obviously Biased towards Force Feedback, but you could have a Saitek EVO FFB stick with 9 functions, unless you wish to be fancy, then it's 27

A Saitek throttle quadrent, which aside from the 4 sticks, 6 buttons

Saitek Pedals

There has been some question here, about their construction

But none will break the bank

PS . . The EVO is favored by those who play in the dark, because of the blue neon illumination of the Keys

Mix and Match

before I pull the trigger on getting a new flight system I have another question :isadizzy: : Can you use different rudder pedals with a different joystick and throttle, such as Saitek rudder pedals with a CH joystick and throttle, or does the software choke when you try to do it?

The C+H Pedals or the Saitek pedals work with anything

actually anything with USB it totally independant

I personaly ran C+H pedals, with a MSFFB II, and later a Saitek EVO

The pedals came with a disc, but they tell you NOT to install it, only use this software if you have a problem with the pedals themselves

I never had a problem :ernae:
