Just Flight Yak-50

I edited the aircraft.cfg as Roger noted and have much more effective elevator trim, I can now actually trim her out without having to hold back pressure...

I am having real problems getting her started. It must be me, as I am not really sure how to interpret the manual... it is a little difficult to follow in my mind...

I cannot find the AIRFIELD SUPPLY OFF BATTERY switch for one, I cannot crank the engine without using the starter... I hope I am not the only one having difficulties following the manual...

I hope there are plenty of repaints for this aircraft like the one in John's video and the earlier still shot in Navy blue. I'd love to see a bare metal paint too.

I made the edit to the elevator trim as well (thank you Roger!) - especially helpful for flying of any distance.

I have had a difficult time with getting the start button to work (edit: until I discovered that it is connected to the air pressure system, and that the air pressure system needs to be 'on' via the control on the left-side floor).

Having watched that video I posted, I've found that I can recreate the elements of that display with this aircraft quite easily, with the right control inputs (of which I need a lot of practice).

Looks great, will be getting this. If I had just seen some pictures of this without any information, I would have thought that it was made by Sibwings.

I've found that it is good to remember with this aircraft to always turn the air pressure system on first thing. I don't know yet how much importance there is in throttle position and amount of prime when starting the engine, but they seem to play a factor.

The engine that powers the Yak-50 has an automatic-mixture type carburetor - which is why there isn't a mixture lever in the cockpit. I have a wheel on my joystick/throttle controller, which I have tied to the mixture, and I've found that this might be a problem - I've gotten the engine started with my mixture controller at 0, and there has been times where I wasn't able to get the engine to start until I advanced my mixture controller while engaging the starter button.

I'd love to buy this now after reading John's comments, but just remembered that my base unit is 30 miles away as using it to test the Museum simulator....so have to wait another week! :(

Would love to see it in the colours of G-FUNK as owned by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd when trading under 'Intrepid Aviation' at North Weald.

Cheers,

Martin

Here's a condensed start procedure (all of the important parts), as shared to me by the developer:

First open "Main air system cock" (45)
Then make sure that "Throttle lever" is set to the position 1/3 of its full travel (28-38%{!!!more then 25%!!!})
Look at the "Fuel pressure gauge" (15) and if pressure is too small - prime it
BUT!!!
For "Manifold priming" primer must be in right position("Cylinder priming" position{this is an error in the User Guide})
So make 5-6 prime(the needle must be in the middle of the green zone)

"AIRFIELD SUPPLY !-! OFF !-! BATTERY" is the first switch(32), which have only two position "off - battery", so make sure that it's in "on" position.

Naturally "Generator"(31), "Ignition"(30) switches are in ON (UP) position

Then click on the Start button

(To build up the fuel pressure before start, you need to use the right mouse key with the primer lever, to turn it to the right and to pump the primer lever until the fuel pressure is in the green. Without the fuel pressure built up, there is no fuel to draw from to prime the engine (left mouse key - left position on the primer lever). For me, this was the final item I had to know to now have no problem at all getting the aircraft started.)

Cheers John. I have managed to get her going twice now, so I must have got the order right at least twice.

Martin, that is a very smart looking aircraft! As Roger mentioned, hopefully some of us can make some time to put together some repaints for this aircraft - there certainly are plenty of options!

Thanks John for the startup procedure.
I put the pdf. shortcut onto the desktop, makes it easier to get information that way.
I've been able to get it started, wish it had instrument lighting as the panel can be hard to read depending on how the sun is in relationship to the panel.
There is a "Smoke System" switch, clicking it on doesn't seem to do anything.
In the manual there is a small section about the radio, I like the way it says "Turn on the power and wait two minuets". They must have had tubes in the radios that had to warm up.
It's a well made plane, glad I got it. I had some rewards points at JustFlight, got it for under $20. Download was simple, glad you don't have to go through the 32 number and letter serial number as you have to do with the Alabeo planes.

Even with the engine running there isn't any smoke visable in the external view.
I've got the blue flashing light when the smoke system switch is on, but no smoke.

Looking in the aircraft.cfg file, the smoke system uses a default effect
fx_smoke_w.fx, perhaps your copy of this is missing?

Thanks very much John for the starting procedure guide.
I agree, just like the Sibwings AN-2, this model is utterly excellent
and extraordinary value for its small price.

Nick

ncooper: looking at the aircraft cfg.file, I have:

[SmokeSystem]
smoke.0=1.00,0.00,-1.3,fx_smoke_w

Is this correct? or is there something that can be changed?
Thanks

No, that's exactly right.
If you don't see smoke, I wondered if the effect to which that line refers is
missing from your FSX\Effects folder.

I hope I have attached the file you need, unzip it and put it into your Effects
folder and see what happens.

Nick

I think today I'll try to get her into a flat inverted spin...this cockpit video shows a pilot working on trying to do just that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUk9ukoXlQM

Here's the same pilot, doing so after some more practice/refinement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_n23zYWRmZU

I've read in various sources that there are only roughly 100 or less Yak-50's flying today - that means they are a rarer sight than say a Mustang (165+ flying) or an AT-6 Texan (I think 350+ flying). Although they have a classic look about them, they aren't really very old - all of them being manufactured between 1975 and 1985.

I'm hoping we'll see some more Yak aircraft by this developer, such as the newly manufactured Yak-3's and Yak-11's. : )

ncooper; Thank you. The file you sent started as a zip.file but somehow ended up as a php file which I can't open.
Since you said maybe the smoke system file may be absent from the effects file, I started up the stock Microsoft Extra 300, it no longer has the smoke effect, so your right, the smoke effect file is missing.

I do have an Alabeo plane that has the smoke effect that is working, so I'll see if I can put that effect into the YAK-50 file.

Thank you.

OK, that seems to be the problem, so here is a link to the unzipped file
which you should be able to save onto your PC first and then put into your Effects folder.
Link removed now

It is widely used, better to replace it than to try and alter all the aircraft that use it.

Regards,
Nick
