'Kesolowski & Edwards: Round 3'

My take on the bump and run tactic:

If you have the faster car and the car in front of you will not yield, then a bump to get his attention and if the driver of the slower car has any brains, he will yield. If not, then get him loose and go around him.

If you have a car that can stay with the car ahead of you, but you cannot gain on him, then intentionally bumping the car ahead to get it out of your way is wrecking someone in order to steal a position.

How do you tell the difference? That is sometimes the 64 million dollar question (used to be the 64 thousand dollar question, but with a devalued dollar and inflation, well, you know). Sometimes it's quite obvious what is happening on the track, sometimes not.

Bump and run is to be used when your blocked in and there is no other way to get around. You don't go 1 1/2 lanes up the track to hit the guy, that's just dirty driving. If Brad had done that to Dale Sr the result on the last lap would have been the same or worse, and the fans and media would have had no problem with it.

I watched the race, and I watched the ending - here's my take:

Last lap - Brad's on the inside, Carls on the outside. If Im Brad, I know someone is on the outside of me, and I know it's Carl and I don't want to have Carl get by me, so I'm going to change my line just enough where I don't lose the "inside" groove but maybe Carl will end up high enough to get into the loose stuff and be forced to back off..

Carl on the other hand knows this and knowing he can't "power" by Brad, decides to "hold his own position" as best he can and the results where - Brad bumps into Carl - Carl's force to back off a bit - Brad takes lead!!

Final turn, Carl knows he can't get by Brad, he knows he's getting close to the "marbles" so instead of just "bumping" him or getting him loose enough, he's bound and determined he's going to win the race so he elects to "spin" Brad with the hopes he can survive the mess and make it to the "checkered flag"!!!

There is a big difference between "bump and run" and "intentionally spinning" someone - we've seen everyone do it and depending on who's doing what to whom, depends on whether we like it or not!!

I don't have a big problem with the 'bump and run" - after all, if the second car wasn't fast enough or the first car wasn't slow enough, the 2 wouldn't get together anyways!!

However I do have a big problem with someone INTENTIONALLY spinning someone else!! So far they have been fortunate that the results haven't been worse!!!

i guess you and i were watching a totally different race....you didn't notice that carl had been running the 'high' line all night? he could 'power' by brad...thats exactly why brad did what he did.

Hey All,

So I'm hearing people like the idea that bump and run is to be used only if somebody is blocking you. If your beat on a restart live with it. Says who? It looks to me like it's available for use any time and Brad used it to slow down a faster car or at least one who had the position on him due to the restart. Who says you can't do that? The reason you don't want to use it all the time is that it is dangerous to yourself and everyone else especially if you do it wrong. What carl did was just retaliation not a bump and run and was wrong.

ok Ed you win...i give up:icon_lol:
but i'm gonna remember this thread the next time somebody bumps yer boy Jimmy...:d

Hey All,

It's against the law to bump 4 time! :d

That said it comes down to how you want to race - if you want to bump and run expect to be bumped and runned. The drivers can sort this out themselves. What has to be penalized heavily is the blatant wrecking of other drivers. Most cases are pretty obvious like Carl last weekend - that was so obvious he should have probably been suspended. Sure there are always going to be some borderline cases but most aren't - they're flat obvious. There are drivers who don't suffer from the bump and run but that is because they don't bump and run - Martin for example. I have faith in the drivers ability to sort this out - just come down hard on the ones where it is clearly over the line.

22 & 60 running together again at Indianapolis Raceway Park...stay tuned..

Last night's race was really tame, guess it's because I was watching it.

I saw the commercial with two haulers, my wife and I had a great laugh at that one!
