Killer Whale kills at Sea World

The one thing that's predictable about wild animals is that they sometimes can be unpredictable.. No matter how much you train them, sometimes instinct just takes over.

If an animal that size acts that way there's not much a person can do unfortunately.

That is really sad. I wonder what will happen to the whale? Will they put it down, like a killer dog or bear, or what? You are right Ferry. There is a reason we call wild animals, "wild."

Just my 2 cents~

Three words: Set them free!
Three more words: Leave them be!

These animals should be allowed to live where they belong, and that place is NOT a gigantic aquarium/pool.

This is why I choose not to visit any zoos or aquariums. It doesn't seem right that I would have to pay, to help keep these animals in captivity.

Ok, I will shut up now. :monkies:

I'm with "Cloud Girl Nine" on this one. Seems a bit cruel to keep them in a tank for our entertianment. A cage is a cage.

The report I just saw on the telly said this is the 3rd time its killed so if they hadn't put it down the first two times why should they on the third?

Who knows?

I agree with the set em free ...

Back after some research ...

A SeaWorld killer whale seized a trainer in its jaws Wednesday and thrashed the woman around underwater, killing her in front of a horrified audience. It marked the third time the animal had been involved in a human death.

I agree with Colud9Gal-But these poor whales have been in captivity too long to survive in the Wild

Bit of trivia: In the wild the Orca's dorsal stands completely vertical but in captivity it is folded over...they do not know why..

Several years ago I was in the San Juan Islands off of Washington State on a 10 day sailing trip..
We came across several pods of Orca's-what a beautiful sight!!!!

Saw a documentary on PBS not too long ago about Orcas.
One of the experts commented it was just a matter of time before an incident like this occurred at one of these parks... :kilroy:

This one in particular needs to be set free, this is its second victim.

Caz

I agree.
If I was a marine mammal that roams the sea by my very nature, I wouldn't want to be stuck in swimming pool the rest of my life.
Poor thing sounds like its miserable.

Third victim. A trainer in 1991, some fool that snuck into it's tank at night in 1999 and the one today.

This is a really well made documentary about dolphins, but it really changed the way I view aquariums and Sea World type places. (The guy wearing the mask at the beginning was the dolphin trainer for "Flipper" who now makes it his life mission to free captive dolphins)

djscoo~ Thanks for the link! I just found it, available to be downloaded via Netflix, so it's now in my Queue.

Yup.
In Auckland they come into the harbour, and move along the coast - usually after rays - and make the boaties really nervous, because they are perfectly capable of eating you.
But they don't, they are curious and will come along and sometimes have a play.
No recorded incident of human fatalities in the wild.
But stick 'em in a cage, and see how bad-tempered they can get.
It's positively 19th-century to do that, a bit like dancing bears.

Blanket statements rarely work.

I keep my Labrador Retriever in a full acre of fenced in backyard. Does that make me a jail keeper?

Depends entirely upon the animal.

A large animal that likes to roam wide ranges should not be kept in a confined area. I agree with that view. However, what about the nature range that the San Diego Zoo uses? It's very large, the same acerage that these animals would roam naturally.

Do the flamingoes need to be freed? When I see them, they look as normal as those in the wild.

When I see otters playing at the zoo they don't look upset to me. They look like they're having a grand time doing what otters do.

Agree with your bolded statement above- so let's compare apples to apples. The initial thread is about a wild animal and not a domestic one.

I'm refering to elephants, giraffes, tigers, polar bears, orcas, gorillas, etc. A zoo is a zoo is a zoo- bottom line, they keep wild animals in captivity for the enjoyment of spectators/visitors.

The only documented attacks on humans by Orcas ALL happened by captive Orcas in places like seaworld. Sure I feel for the dead woman and her family but these animals werent meant to be show pieces for fat***es to sit and watch to do tricks for food. Sigfreid and Roy, ask them about wild animals, the woman who had her hands and face torn off by a friends pet chimp Im sure has a view on this as well. Its all cool to have a pet that can kill you till it does. It wasnt the Orcas fault, he didnt swim into the pen.

i wonder, if they find the whale to have been unsafe, how are they gonna make him pay the fine?

*makes note to self*

When taking C9G on a date, don't mention going to the zoo! ....
