Marine Pfc. Hector A. Cafferata Jr.,member of Fox Company, who was the recipient of the M.O.H. for his gallantry in action at the Chosin Reservoir has passed away. Read his story here...http://www.militarytimes.com/story/...d-medal-honor-chosin-reservoir-dies/83078984/

In addition there is a book available titled "The Last Stand of Fox Company" that concerns the whole battle including the CAS supplied by the RAAF in their P-51s. There is also a second book titled "Give Me Tommorrow" which also covers the action. I have read both and they are eye-opening as to the conditions these Marines fought in. Worked with several of them in my previous life and all they would say is that it was "pretty ....... cold!""
Bit of trivia..did you know it was nick-named the "Tootsie Roll War"?

Yeah its a funny story. Though not so funny at the time, I'm sure. It actually saved thier lives in the end. Imagine getting hundreds of 'Tootsie Rolls' when you asked for mortar rounds. The code word for the mortar rouds was 'Tootsie Roll'. Well someone took it literal. Because of the SNAFU they were able to use the candies to fix the fuel lines on some of the trucks which helped them to get out.

Look it up. Its a great read.

BH..

..another reason was that it was so cold, the coldest it was reported had been in ages, that all the rations would freeze into congealed unedible blocks and caused stomach/digestive problems if eaten at all. With the Chinese so close, to start a fire to melt/warm the meals was to draw unwanted attention. They would put the Tootsie Roll in their mouth and just let it melt. Gave them some of the things they needed to replenish some of their depleting energy stocks. Not much but something.
