Last WW I Vet Dies

It is terrible to hear of the passing of Frank Buckles, but what a life that man lived! It is greatly unfortunate that we are losing these very last human-attachments to that time period and that war - much like what my dad saw in the 40's and 50's, which was then the last Civil War vets passing away.

Thinking about the life that Frank Buckles had, it is even more amazing, for me personally, considering the fact that my great grandpa, who went to France in 1918 as part of the AEF, and my great, great grandpa on the other side of my family, who trained for going to war in 1917/1918, but thankfully never had to, both passed away roughly a half century ago!

Just a little correction on the title of this thread...Frank Buckles was the last, known, U.S. WWI veteran. I know of Claude Choules in Australia, and Florence Green in Britain, both of whom are surviving veterans of WWI - there may be more that I cannot recall at this time.
 
The world as we know has now truly changed....A new generation will grow up with no living connection to a significant & historic moment in the world's past...

Sad day but it had to happen.
Both of my grandfathers were in the Great War but both are long gone. I never really got the chance to ask about their exploits.:medals:
 
wow I just read this, there aint many ww-2 ones left also, I am a life member in the American legion and DAV and I'll bet at our next meeting a standing salute honor will be given to him.

I wonder if any from either side is all gone too. (from all who fought in WW-1)

True enough. The last heard on this about a year ago we are losing them at the
rate of about 1000 a day. Another great resource is passing on... listen to them.

Last I heard there was a British Royal Navy sailor still alive from WWI. Or has he passed and I missed it?

As far as I know he's still alive. I think I read somewhere that he lives in Australia, and there's a British woman who served with the RAF and she had a birthday a couple of weeks ago... 110 years old or something like that.
 
As I mentioned a little about in my previous post, Claude Choules, who was in the Royal Navy during WWI, survives in Australia, and Florence Green, who was part of the RAF in WWI, survives in Britain. Other than these two, there does not seem to be any other proven WWI vets surviving.

The last survivor from the 'Central Powers', Franz Künstler, passed away in 2008.
