LDR Development Ryan Navion B Released!

Little wonder it was difficult to find any Navions in Australia. There were only ever 2 aircraft imported and one was destroyed in a fire in 1966. Have some photos of the Australian Navion so I will try to do a repaint.

Now some questions:

1. What is the difference between the North American Navion and the Ryan Navion? Ii am assuming there is no difference other than a change of manufacturing ownership.

2. The difference between the 'B' model and the 'Rangemaster' model. I am asking this because the Aussie aircraft has 'Rangemaster' painted on the tip tanks.

North American Aviation (the makers of the P-51) designed and built the first Navions immediately after the war as a way of getting into the civilian market. They later sold the rights to the Navion to the Ryan aircraft company. The name Navion is actually derived from North American Aviation. There are some schools of thought that say that due to the way the aircraft name was constructed from the company name then the correct pronunciation should be 'Nay-vion' but most people these days refer to it as a 'Nav-ion'. Some stylistic logos of the period also show the name written as 'nAvion' which again implies a 'nAy-vion' pronunciation.

The Rangemaster is also known as a Navion Model H and is the 5-seat cabin version designed to compete with the Pipers and Beechcraft aircraft of the period. The airframe used the forward fuselage and wings of the earlier models but the canopy was ditched in favour of a cabin arrangement. This meant the rear of the fuselage was increased in height which provided space for the fifth seat behind the regular rear seat in what was the former baggage area.

The Rangemaster never really caught on as it was out-performed by it's rivals in every aspect.

I remember as a kid thinking they looked cool - probably their fighter plane-ish looks - but my dad saying they were a bit under powered.

Boys and girls... I need your input. While working on the Navion A, I found a new technique for making my bump maps... I loved it, so I decided to, as a test, apply the same process to the B... to see if it really was different. I loved the end result, they were sharper, more distinct, more realistic in my eyes... and I will hopefully upload it as a patch/upgrade...

here's the thing... I want you SOH folks to test it for me if you would be so kind...

Simple process, go to your navion B folder, to the texture subfolder, and rename the two bump files 260_B1_Bump and 260_B2_Bump and add 'old' or something then simply drop these two files in... Tell me what you think!

I have just tried the 2 BMP's on the bare metal USAF repaint and it does have a more buffed up appearance. I don't know if it's just me but it also looks like somebody has also polished up the windows.I have not tried it on a painted version yet but overall I would say it is a great improvement.

Just tried new bump maps and think it does look a lot sharper, windows look about the same shine as in your pic above on my system.

Ask Paul if he can post a picture of it.

Bruce: thanks, as I said to paul, the shine shouldn't be remotely different... they aren't even the same map or part or texture sheet... can't influence each other at all... all this is changing is surface elevation.
 
My eyes aren't the sharpest anymore but even they see an improvement. Love the continued commitment to better the product. The Ryan series is putting up a strong fight to oust the Real Air Legacy as my go to plane.
