Ok shipmates,

I stumbled across the following site, and so happy I did. For a mere .09 per song (yes, that's right NINE CENTS per song!), you can download a lot of music, cheap and legally.

Go to:

http://www.legalsounds.com/help

The initial cost is $25, to start an account. That money is then in your account as a credit. I have downloaded a LOT of music, and still have $22 left! It is so cool, because you can search for a specific song, artist, or album, and then select what you want. The price per song stays the same.

I read a couple comments on a forum where someone had experienced problems with payments, etc... But Legalsounds must have fixed such errors, because I have had zero difficulties.

Anyway, I wanted to share this with you all. I think it is a great site, and fantastic deal!

Hmm. . . could you download specific songs that you like to a folder on your PC and then load them onto a CD to play in your car ??

I am sure you can. I have not made a CD yet, as I mostly use a MP3 player. But to my knowledge, making a cd would work just fine.

I just checked the site out and it says that you can download either tracks or albums so it appears that you can select specific songs to download.

As all the downloads are in the .mp3 format you will not be able to burn them to a CD to play in your car unless your car player has the ability to play MP3 files (many of the newer players can play both CD and MP3 files).

If it is the older type of player that will only play CDs then you will have to convert them to wave files (.wav or .cda extensions) using a conversion program of some sort and then burn the new files to a CD but be aware that as you will be converting MP3 files to wave format you will suffer a loss in quality compared to a true CD.

MP3 is a 'lossy' format (much like comparing .jpg to .bmp files) and to make files sizes smaller data is 'thrown away' to achieve the smaller file size therefore when you convert a MP3 file to wave format there is data 'missing' compared to the original wave format that was used to create the MP3 in the first place.

However, if you are not an 'audiophile' or someone who has worked in the recording industry (like me) then you may well be quite happy with the converted files and to be honest if they are only going to be played in a car system the loss of audio quality would probably go unnoticed amongst the background of road and engine noise.

To me, MP3 players is the way to go. I have three of them. Cheap nowadays. All of mine are the Sansa brand, and they're easy to use.

MP3s are certainly convenient in terms of file size but as for audio quality they will never compare to a recording in wave (CD) format. Much like CDs will never compare to a recording on vinyl played through a reasonably good hi-fi system.

I still have all my vinyl records (most still look and play as good as new) and I do still play them from time to time and I can certainly hear the difference between a vinyl recording and a CD recording of the same album.

the first time i REALLY noticed the difference was listening to a bass note that was really really low and didn't show up on the digital format. it changed the entire flavor of the song, and i had not heard it before.
