Hello Family, (especially the admin. staff who has access to Ickie!) Hey_Moe and Henry & CK... and (pardon me if I miss your name!)

Did we hear anything from Ron yet?

Are we still accepting donations for his monitor? Let us keep the fire burning, (not that we want Ron to work on SOH already), but we have to be ready as soon as he has recuperated- to have the funds ready so we can get him the monitor that we can possibly afford!

Is that too much for asking? (Or maybe I have to read all post first before I yakked- apologies!)

Eli :bump:

I'm not sure where that stands at the moment. I'm sure Moe would have a better idea on it.

Good morning....FYI we are at 773.77 as of 08/22/2009. The donations have come to a stop.We spent around 700.00. I talked to Ron the other day.....he seems to be getting better so far. He says he gets tired easy....maybe all that work has finally caught up with him.We are about a grand short...I can do one of two things...we can put the money toward the bandwidth fund ....or just keep it open and hope for the best....Mike

I say we keep it open and hope for the best.

Perhaps show daily totals to know what we are up against?

If a lot of us put in $20.00, it would get there real quick.

WHY are we insisting on a $1700 monitor. Please tell me what it has that you can't find on a Samsung, Viewsonic, LG, etc that makes it worth so much money?

I don't mean to sound uncharitable or ungrateful to Icke and all he has done for us here at SOH. I know we totally can't repay him. However, we have to be realistic. You are asking people who have to decide if they can afford a $30-40 add-on to help pay for a $1700 monitor when you have over $700 in the monitor fund.

Ickie is not a member of Congress. Nor, knowing him, do I think he wants to be treated as such. In my mind insisting on buying a $1700 monitor when $700 would buy three monitors and a TH2Go is a bit like a congressional pork package. Hell, I bet even the military doesn't pay that much for their monitors.

In the meanwhile, Ickie goes without?

Am I missing something here?

Please tell me if have it wrong.

I was at the pc store the other day, and looked at the apple monitors. I am far from an expert. I think the 24in apple was about $1000 can. There was another apple (24) that was even more. There was an LG (30") that was around $700 can. It looked HUGH compared to the apples, and to me (no expert), the display was just as good. There must be a reason that the apples cost so much. Boy, that 30"er sure looked nice! They only had three apple monitors. In Canadian dollars a 30" apple would be way up there! They do not even stock them and I am pretty sure they will not even order one. I am happy with my 24" samsung. If my wife saw a 30" monitor sitting in front of me, well, this would be my last post. Maybe we can try 1 last push for funds, see what we come up with, then make a decission? If it was me, I would like to see the monitor sooner than later. We should get Ickie a monitor, that's what the donations were for.

I just kicked in another $100.The problem is we need to keep a thread on top with a running total,I thought we had met the goal.

That's the problem..lack of info. Moe is there anyway to put a running total banner up?

apparently, you missed the fiasco a month or so ago with the new monitor that crapped out.
I don't have the time or energy to search for the thread, but, as I recall, it was all a major pain for Ron.
the discussion had moved to 'lets get a high quality one and stop messing around' or, at least, that's what I thought was decided.
I am of the opinion that a few cash dollars from each of us would be the least painful, but unfortunately, it is cumbersome for Mike, who is to collecting it.

The Apple monitor is second to none. Its huge, and resolution is incredible. We had talked about how it would be best on Ickies eyes as he does alot of work on the website, hours and hours, monitoring it, keeping it running. This would be the best we could do for that one element of SOH, visual interaction with the 'captain of the boat'.

I myself would be donating far more then $20.00. I feel SOH is worth it. Thats me though. Some might think the opposite.

Also, on a side note, I notice that BestBuy are having sales on Apple equipment. Laptops are on sale, the 24inch iMac is on sale. The huge monitor might come up on sale. Also, I wonder if Apple might float us a deal if we ask them directly?

Man, the daily totals will keep Hey_Moe (Mike), overwhelmed! But that probably the best way to go -- so members will be inspired! Maybe we can just do the totals and not the names... to ease Mike's work. He does these for all of us in his own time and effort, with Mrs. Moe's help; (or maybe Mike just let Mrs. Moe work on it - and he just sat on the couch and with the remote in one hand, i don't know- just talking based on my experience!) :icon_lol: I am not picking on you Mike :icon_lol: again, I am just talking based on my own experience... (I have been there- I know what I am talking about!)

If you have already donated, and still have more leftovers, do not hesitate to donate a few more! :medals:

Let's just keep the ball rolling! We can always put the leftovers to the bandwidth fund, anytime! It's always good to have more than enough!

I agree with Chacha and Lionheart. Just post the amount we need and have raised so far (if it's not too much trouble):ernae:.

I've been using a Hanns-G 28 inch LCD monitor for months now and am greatly pleased with it. Especially since the price was under $500. Costco and Newegg have carried it.

Just checked Newegg. $299!

Sorry I didn't get a chance to hook back up with you guys. I didn't post a total because if ya remember we decided to pick Ron up a laptop,a fruit basket, some cards and magazines. Total was around 700.00. I didn't know how much Eli needed so I transferred a grand to her, she returned the rest the other day, so I really couldn't tell ya the right amount till then. I you guys remember I asked ya if ya wanted to go in that direction of buying him the stuff before Ron had his heart surgery. Y'all agreed on that part. We had just about the full amount give or take a few hundred. Part two of this if ya remember he settled for the cheaper monitor, and that went to monitor haven...lol. Also if you have ever owned a Apple 24 to 30 inch screen you would understand why we should go in that direction. It is 10 times easier on your eyes, runs very cool, and on very low DC voltage.. I compare my 2 24 inch HP monitors and my 24 inch Asus monitor to Linda's 24 inch Apple monitor......they can't touch the Apple. The screen it brighter and way better looking. Please stop telling me that you found one that is cheaper, ect..ect.The bottom line is if ya want to donate...fine donate...if ya don't that is fine too....this is a gift and not something anybody has to do. Ron looks at that screen 24/7 and if any of you guys know me I like buying the best that money can buy. I would do the same for anybody else in here if this was you.I don't care to mess or work with other peoples money because of what is being said now....I also decided not to post what our members have donated or their names this time because I got a lot of email last time from some who said they just plain out couldn't afford to give one thing...which is totally understandable. Some of our members I donated for them and just signed there name. That is also why I had that screen shot contest, winner gets a hundred bucks donated in there name. Some of our members have lost there job and are some are on a pay check to pay check week. So PLEASE use your money on something else. SOH is a pretty close nit family in here and when something happens to a member we all pull together as a family. If you guys would like I can start posting the total every couple of days. But please understand one thing...this is something you do not have to do and there is not one person that is forcing you to do this either...Mike

I wondered the same thing... Samsung monitors are incredible. They beat the pants off of any LG, Dell, HP, or ASUS monitor I've ever seen. You could buy 4-5 24 inch samsungs for the price of one Apple 24 inch... :kilroy:

I guess I need to get to an Apple store and check out their monitors. I just bought a Samsung 24" for a second monitor as they were only $150 at the time. My main monitor is a 24" Dell. The Samsung is much better and I am going to switch them around as I don't use the second monitor as much as I thought I would. You have my interest tweaked on the Apples though. If we can raise the money I say go for it. I just think you have a tough sell on your hands right now. Good luck.

I was looking at them the other day. They are huge. When you see shows on architects and music people that have big monitors, they always have the large Apple monitors. Alton Brown has one on Iron Chef. (one or two, lol). Feng uses them as well in his studios.

I wish I had one. They are awesome. I must say though, my 24" apple screen is pretty big.

Incredible to see the future going on. I remember when flat screens were science fiction. Now I have a TV/Stereo/Online device with the witts of an early laptop computer that fits in my pocket.... (iPod iPhone). Oh.. and it has a phone in it.. wireless... and a camera, and a video tape type movie camera complete with film editor, lol..

Just the total every couple of days would be cool.I don't need my name posted or anything....besides the cops might see it,lol.

Stop Lionheart, You make me drool!

Mike,

Don't stress yourself man! :icon_lol:

I salute your hardwork and patience! Not to mention, your good cause and again your patience! It is really very stressful putting all these things together! But man, you are the brain of these things, we are the other parts, hand, foot, arm, eye; we can work together for a good cause! And that is our goal!

I'm thinking this might be the best resolution of the monitor donation drive, let's give it another 30 days or so. I'm good for another donation, if 50-60 other folks can toss in some we'll be able to get Ickie the high-end Apple unit. After 30 days if it appears that the SOH members are "tapped out", then OK we get him the very best one we can with what's been donated and be done with it. Hey_Moe (Mike) has done a great job handling all the funds collected but I don't think it's fair that he should have this task as a permanent assignment.

I think part of the problem is that money is tight. Some of us can, however, come up with some money. If 10 of us can come up with 100 each, the problem is sloved. If it takes 5 to come up with 200 each, then I will be happy to send another 200. The waiting for Ickie to have a monitor is the worst part for me. When I want something, I want it today. We could be waiting for months and still not have enough, and Ickie still not get a monitor. If we cannot come up with the full amount, some other 30" brand is much better than nothing. Guys and gals, we all know times are tough and the future is uncertain, It is totally impossible for most of us to free up any money now, that is just the way things are. Some of us are able to step up and put an end to this. Sept. is a tough month for me. I have to pay 1/2 of the house tax and my 30 year old "kid" says she needs money to get the grandkids set up for school. I can still sneak off 1 or 2 hundred if that will get this job done. However, if I sent more money and Ickie did not get some kind of monitor, that would not feel too good. Everytime I have made a donation to SOH, for anything, I always got something in return. That's a nice little touch and it makes me know that SOH is grateful. It would be really nice to put this to rest. Any takers?
