Excellent, very much looking forward to these.

The gun turrets on your models look like twin 5"/38's rather than the 8" originally installed. From what I have read, they were removed from both Lexington and Saratoga in 1942. Lexington had hers replaced with seven quadruple 1.1-inch gun mounts and Saratoga had hers replaced with four twin 5"/38's

Changed the guns for the outfit in the 1930th. Not perfect, but i think it`s much better this way.

Just downloaded and installed and am very impressed.

Couple historical issues I noticed, now none of these are all that important and will not be changing, just thought I would note them and you can do with this information what you wish.

The 1936 versions of Lexington and Saratoga seam to have 40mm Bofors AA guns but the US did not start producing them until 1941, also the 1942 Lexington has 5"/38 twin turrets which it never received.

Saratoga had black stripe painted on the funnel for identification to distinguish herself from Lexington. As can be seen from these two photo's from 1935 and 1938

In the above photo you can see the front of the flight deck tapered inward, this was not changed until the refit in early 1941.

Top to botton, Saratoga, Lexignton, Ranger.

If I could ask for two things, first in the 1942 version could you widen the path between the aircraft on the left edge of the flight deck and those parked next to the island. Its not quite wide enough to taxi a wildcat through it.

Second is a problem with ship wakes in P3D4, this seams to be common to all of the new carriers I have tried. I have done a few searches on the subject and some of the posts indicate its an insolvable problem but there are some ships where it does work, here are is a picture showing its possible, to the left and further away is the USS Nimitz by Javier Fernandez, center is the new Saratoga and to the right and closer is the 1944 Flying Stations Victorious.

I know this sounds like a lot of negativity but I don't mean it that way, these new ships are extremely good and will find prominent place in my fleet. Thank you Klaus for all your efforts on these.

Yep, you're right. The F4F-3's did not have folding wings.
It was the F4F-4's (delivered to squadrons starting in early 1942) that were equipped with the "sto-wing" feature.

Neither the F4F-3 Wildcat nor the SBD Dauntless had folding wings and they were both in service in 1942.

Been adding effects to all the new ships and added the stripe to Saratoga. These pics are from P3Dv4.5.
Joe

Joe, I like the stack smoke and bow wave effects you used. Are they specific to P3Dv4.5 or also available in FSX? Unless I'm doing it the wrong way it seems like a tedious process to add the effects to the ships' .mdl files with MCX. Adjust x/y/z numbers, check placement, over and over... Finally save the mdl file and hope for no errors. I spent the wee hours of the morning today trying to add bow wave and smoke effects to a couple carriers. Had some success with the smoke but not the bow waves. :banghead:

No, they can be used in both sims. It is a tedious process and a lot easier once you know what to do. For the bow effect use this and then adjust to fit. These are for the Lex/Sara model.....

Effect
EffectName = fx_wake_bow_Zu
EffectParameters = 0
General
AttchPointName = attptbowwake
Orientation = (leave as is)
Position = (0.00; 72.70; 0.00)

1st set of numbers are for left/right, 2nd set back/forward, 3rd down/up all from center line of the model.
For ship smoke I used this...

Effect
EffectName = fx_Ship_smoke
EffectParameters = 0
General
AttchPointName = attpt_smoke00
Orientation = (leave as is)
Position = (15.50; -55.00; 19.00)

Effect
EffectName = fx_Ship_smoke
EffectParameters = 0
General
AttchPointName = attpt_smoke01
Orientation = (leave as is)
Position = (15.50; -61.00; 19.00)

Effect
EffectName = fx_Ship_smoke
EffectParameters = 0
General
AttchPointName = attpt_smoke02
Orientation = (leave as is)
Position = (15.50; -67.00; 19.00)

Effect
EffectName = fx_Ship_smoke
EffectParameters = 0
General
AttchPointName = attpt_smoke03
Orientation = (leave as is)
Position = (15.50; -73.00; 19.00)

And for the Wake...

Effect
EffectName = fx_wake_l
EffectParameters = 0
General
AttchPointName = attpt_sternwake
Orientation = (leave as is)
Position = (0.00; -190.00; 0.00)

You can use these as a basis for adding effect to all your ships. You should have all these effects in the root Effects folder in sim.
I add these then compile the model (make sure to add a prefex to the name (Lexington1936gun_P3D or _FSX) as to not overwrite
the original mdl and then amend the model cfg file to point to the new mdl. Then I go into sim and check for placement and if I
need to move I open the mdl again and adjust, save and repeat.

Joe

Joe, thanks a bunch for the effects and positional info. I know that took you a while to put into format for a post. :encouragement:
That gets me in good shape for working with Klaus's ships. I will follow your suggestion to save the new .mdl file with a new name instead of overwriting the original, maybe that's where I get the errors.

I have Klaus's straight deck Midway and escort ships in P3Dv4.5 but no smoke.

I do have smoke with his Essex boats + escorts. I see in the sim.cfg for these and other AI ships the effect entry for wakes but nothing for smoke, so assumed this is baked into the model (and you need run it through MCX to change it)? Is that correct?

Yes. One thing I should add is the Effects entry in the sim.cfg file should be deleted or commented out ( // ). As you have added the effect straight to the model in MCX.

Joe

I attempted to add the bow wave effect (for starters) to Klaus's Lexington in MCX and immediately got a "system out of memory" error when I opened the attached objects box. That seemed strange since the Task Manager only showed 55% CPU useage. Attempted to continue and got Object Write errors when I tried to save. :banghead:

Please excuse my lack of knowledge but where is this effects data placed using MCX for FSX? And, could one just copy/paste the above entries in the appropriate place? I like both the wake and the smoke effects and would like add to some of my models, especially the carriers I use.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

There are a few things you do. Once the mdl is open in MCX, click on the paperclip on the bottom row in the tool bar, (this will show you what is attached to the model)
2nd is click on the Wireframe Render mode button (to the right of the camera button). This will show the model in wireframe and easier to see the attached points.
Then click on Attached Object Editor (little wrench in the 2nd row). Once the AOE is open to add an effect click on "ADD" then Effect then fill in the fields with the info
I posted. You can copy/paste or type them in. Once you are done with adding all the effects close the AOE and then compile the model (Export Object).
