I think XF-90 was Lockheed's last attempt to get more use of the basic F-80 airframe although the U-2 fuselage bears a passable resemblence.

Sweet. I jave a book with detailed photos of this aircraft. May have to try and give it a makeover...

The story of this aircraft is basically this; over weight and under powered. The YF-93 was a little better, but the XF-88 Voodoo was the clear winner of the competition. Unfortunately, it was never put into production, since at the time bombers were considered more important (LeMay).

Two were built. One was stress tested to destruction. The other was used in nuclear bomb testing and sat out in the Nevada desert for years wrecked and contaminated. The USAF museum has it now, they've decontaminated it and intend to display it as is.

the Aquatone project (later known as U-2) was actually based on the earliest XF-104 iterations, actually, not the F-80. Not to say there mightn't have been some obscure element Kelly Johnson carried through all three airframes, but I'm not aware of any, at least.
