Looking for some help...

Hey All,

Im looking for anyone interested to give me a hand with getting a new machine...

I turned away for a few minutes today, went back to my pc, and bam..... It was dead... I figured it was the power supply... So i went to Best Buy and got a 440W to replace the old 400 W . I hooked up everything I could, and.... no go. It still wouldn't power on. I am tired of dealing with this machine. I've had problems with it since the word go.

I was wondering if anyone would help me build my first PC... I only have limited computer know-how, but I'd like to salvage as much of the old as possible. I have 8 gigs, in 4 sticks, of DDR 2 800mhz Ram... the sticks say, PC2-6400... I could live with getting diff. ram.

I also have 2 good, (presumably still good) HDD's, both SATA. I would assume the DVD Burner is still good, it's SATA, but I don't know how hard is it to install that onto a new motherboard?? That's all I'd really need to save... The video card is pretty shot...

If anybody would be willing to help point me to the right things to get, I'd be ecstatic...

I'd like to have something than ran FSX pretty smoothly... I was getting about 25 fps before, so I'd like to do that or better.

feel free to PM me too...

Witt, I suggest posting this in the FSX Guides section of the FSX forum, (I can move it there if you like just let me know) it is likely to get the type of attention you need, and our resident expert Txnetcop will very likely pick up on it quickly over there.

What I can tell you is, if your drives are SATA and working OK you should have no problem keeping them, simple to move to a new box. The RAM, I would replace, DDR3 will make a big difference, and the powersupply, think 700 watts or more, you can't have too much power (as per Tim the Tool Man Taylor).

Anyway let me know if you want this moved and I can take care of it.

How big is your tower. That is the first place you need to look because the MB you buy are bigger that the normal ones they put in the ready to go tower. For what little bit you are spending ya might wanna just look at a tower replacement with everything already in it.

Sure Thing Mike, Go ahead and move it...

I am going out and hunting down an external SATA drive reader so that I can get some of the info I need right away. Unfortunately there is no big computer store anywhere near.. Office Max's website says they have one, but don't know if it's in the store. If I can't find one, there is one on eBay for about $30 with shipping, which is about what any of them run...

Yeah, that's similar to what I am looking at... Unfortunately Best Buy does not have anything like that in their store here...
