Luftwaffe airbase help needed

Michael, is that the kind of book you could get from a German public Library to see if it was worth buying?

Luftwaffe buildings

Hi Pat

Please note:

- most airfields the Luftwaffe used were excisting ones expanded by the Germans throughout the war: they were in use as grassfields by the continental airforces before the occupation, Germans place the concrete runways

- airfield buildings were built of local material, and based upon local architecture, and/or were camouflaged (hangar painted as farmshed etc, or fake farmshed roof upon building) to blend into the landscape.

- there was no standarddesign for the various bunkers for the whole continent: each country seems to have it's own standardbunkers on the airfields. The same as for Atlantic wall type bunkers (French bunkers not in The Netherlands etc)

FouteMan,

I think we saw some examples of the camo paint back when we were attempting the first ETO. Can you provide any more examples? Or we can make a fair attempt using what buildings we already have and mix terracotta, slate, thatch, corrugated steel and other roof types to create the hodgepodge farmshead style.

Noted, thanks Ton :)

I've found a couple of repaints and Daves NJ Hangar but there seems little else available for buildings for this project, anyone know of any others?

What do you mean/need?

Any suitable buildings Ted, especially hangars. I'd like to make the 'foreign' airfields as visually distinct from the RAF ones as possible. Ground textures can be made fairly quickly, buildings are another matter so if there was anything around that could be made use of it'll get the project off the ground more easily.

Too start with though stock repaints will suffice :)

Hi Pat, I recently saw some stuff on Luftwaffe airbases of the period, but unfortunately I can't remember where. I'd be more than happy to help you out on this project. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. It's great seeing you back on.:wavey:

Pat Pattle do you have the night fighter hanger for 110's, it was very good. I remember helping with pics for it for the builder. Its gotta get a showing.:jump:

I checked the public library in the next big city and the little one in our hometown:

not there, just books on technical aspects of aviation, but nothing relevant on the historical side of it.....
I look for a second hand copy, if its not too expensive I buy it, a few nice colour shots should be there.....

Oki, bump up your request to region/province/state. The government depository libraries might have military reports and photographs.

there are private collections and probably some historical archives with the present German forces (certainly not accessible for guys like me), but I don't think public libraries in Germany have any original documents, photographs, magazines, books etc. of the WW2 period in stock. This would all be considered as more or less illegal NAZI propaganda material, at least as far as uniforms, flags, military equipment and NAZI leaders are shown. Most of this has been destroyed or carried away anyway. There is one Federal Institution, where much of the remaining things are centrally archived, which has also been mentioned here recently:

I saw beautiful photos and documents, but I find it very difficult to navigate through that material over the net and find specific things. Whatever useful I find, I will certainly bring up here....

Oki, if you see something good 2nd hand, let me know and I will contribute cost wise! Seems quite a few volumes so if possible we might want ones more to the West than East.
