Major Tommy McGuire's Pudgys

Devildog73 asked me some time ago if I would make a collection of McGuires aircrafts. (I think he maybe has some campaign ideas up the sleeve..) Thought it was a very good idea, so here's my contribution. I cant swear every detail is 100% correct. Some of his aircrafts are not very well documented on the net.

A question or two

I hate asking stupid questions but here goes....
There was no Sound file in the upload. Can I assume that you intended we should copy one from an existing Copley AC? I tried it and it seems to work. I love the 38 and this is a very nice one. I especially liked the trick with the pilot exiting the cockpit when you open the canopy.

Many many thanks.

I'm pretty sure that Pudgy was either an F or a G model, and Pudgy II was definitely an H model.

Of course that observation is only made in the interest of historical accuracy. It in no way is intended to detract from your fantastic paint work Morton. In fact, I think all your natural metal P-38Js have the absolute most realistic aluminum finish I have seen. I only wish I could paint half as well as you do. Rock on. :salute:

Tommy McGuire reported to New Guinea in a brandy new P-38H which was promptly christened "Pudgy". I will have to go back into the book a ways to get the actual happenings, but I believe Pudgy was shot down or crashed by another pilot "borrowing" it for a mission. Tommy then got another H model: Pudgy II. Pudgy III and IV were J models, and Pudgy V was an L model.

So, that being said, I have already used Morton's textures in the proper Copley P-38s and they work just fine. In my next set of missions, I will include instructions for using David Copley's P-38H with PUDGY and PUDGY II, DCC's P-38J for PUDGY III AND IV. The J model had the same Allison 1710 engines, but the supercharger intercoolers were moved from the wings into a "chin" position below the prop drive shaft. This increased cooling and therefore increased power over the H model. The space in the wings was then converted to two 55 gal fuel tanks.

I have not gotten to the P-38L missions yet, so I have not yet tested Morton's skin on Gryphon's P-38L-5-LO with PUDGY V, but if it works, I will post here and let everyone know. The basic difference between the J and L models were rocket pylons and 300 gal external fuel tanks. They had virtually the same Allison 1710 engines, though different models of it, and the same dive recovery flaps. So, I can use DCC P-38J as the L model without much difficulty, as long as McGuire did not have any missions with rockets. We will see.
