Skylane,

If some of the landclass texture bitmaps are 86.3kb instead of 86.4kb, that can often cause problems with CFS2 crashing.

Rami,

It would be a very unique landclass bitmap that gave a CTD round Valetta, but not elsewhere in the MTO:ipepsi2:. A better set of bitmaps to check might be the infrastructure/ object bitmaps, or texture bitmaps in the Malta sceneries themselves.
:kilroy:
Are there any objects that are peculiar to the Valetta area?
Are there any unique bitmaps? Remember blended airbase bitmaps may be in DXT3 format, & they'll be fine as such.

Hi,
I have taken a look at the models, they are complex and lack LODs.
BSK_St_Paul has 8484 polygons and have five draw calls
All the other objects seem to be the same and will cause the computer to work very hard then plus the computers work playing missions this could be another reason for CTD.
Robert John

Robert,

Good work on this:applause:. However, is BSK_St_Paul called for as a gsl object? If so, it's not the source of Skylane's CTD (skylane
I deactivated the GSL, and it still crashes):pop4:

- although I agree, forcing the PC to work so hard may be a contributory factor in flying the campaign/ missions.:isadizzy:

Gotta keep looking

Hi UncleTgt,
its a gsl object.

[h=3]1. Mar.g’s Malta Mesh, coastlines and landclass : [/h][h=3]You will find it in the folder “Marg Malta”. See instructions in this folder’s readme for installation. Note that to avoid bad cases of repeated “CTD’s”,it is HIGHLY recommended to copy & paste the content from your SCENEDB/world/textures folder into the Malta1 and Malta2 textures folder.
[/h]Could this be a piece of the puzzel, alot of the same textures in diffrent folders being use at the same time, can this cause conflicting problems

RJ

Hi Robert,

CFS 2 is very clever in how it reads textures, it has a strict hierarchy that we can exploit.
:monkies:
If a model or bgl calls for a a texture bitmap & that bitmap exists within the texture folder of the a/c, inf, add-on scenery, then CFS 2 will use that. WRT scenery, it's the scenery library that dictates which terrain is uppermost, so there will be processing delays, but no errors caused there because of multiple calls for the same bitmap name.. If the add-on calls for a texture bitmap that does not exist, CFS 2 goes looking for it in the SCENEDB & CFS 2/TEXTURE folders. This is the catch all that requires the texture bitmap name to appear within these "base" texture folders.
:isadizzy:
We can expliot this heirarchy of use to create lagoon water textures, or snow cover for one add-on area, whilst other areas that use the same bitmap name do not display snow.

So, I don't think its the multiple textures with the same name that's causing the CTD. But you set me thinking again.

Well I downloaded BSK_Malta & took a look at the file contents. I can see the LandclassMalta folder, which no-one has mentioned at all before.

I really do think the source of the problem lies somewhere within these land & water class bgls. Rather than go into the long-winded explanation now, I would like to see if we can confirm whether this folder's contents are the source of the CTDs first. Suffice to say at this point that I have experienced CTDs when working on my own scenery projects, & founds that landclass/ waterclass conflicts where the reason. Once I fixed the conflict, the CTD disappeared.

So, we can test this, all I need is someone to deactivate the "landclassmalta" folder in their scenery hierarchy & go fly.
Don't concern yourself with how the terrain looks, we can always fix that later. Fly the missions, fly to Valetta, try to reproduce the CTD condition/ location & see if the CTD repeats.

If it doesn't, then the contents of this folder are all that needs to be revised, & this can be done using EZ-Landclass.

Any volunteers?
:icon35:

welll..!

the malta campaign allways works well for me, the problem perhaps is other , no a scenery problem. I use the Rami MTO tutorial . Any way , I learn a lot with Uncle t explanation indeed.

Understood Misson, but it seems like there is a significant minority that cannot get this Malta scenery to work, & they need help identifying what's causing the trouble, whatever it is...

... I'll head off back to the PTO then...:running:

oops.. seems I missed this.. :redf:
RJ, thanks for pointing it out; I´ll copy the textures, try again and report later.

Ok, I tried my mission once now with those textures in the landclass folders, and it worked without a problem, no ctd anymore..
I´ll try a couple more during the day, just to make sure, but I thing the problem is solved.
Seems it was a case of me being too stupid to read the instructions properly...

Skylane,

Glad you seem to have it working now.

Who'd of thought ...****... :icon_lol:

Now is anyone else gonna own up? :icon_eek:

Misson,

Sorry for my tetchy response earlier, it seems you were correct, it was indeed "something else" :toilet:

I flew the mission several times today, unfortunately I still get CTDs... Not every time, as before, but about 15%.
I tried to turn off the Landclass Malta, still sometimes it crashes.
I´ll have to test some more, next thing I do is use different airplanes to make sure it is not them...

RJ might be correct then, it might be the multiple texture calls in the St Paul & other building objects - or did you fly with the gsl turned off & get random CTDs?

Skylane,

ok do not worry uncle! What I do understand is that the energies of the discussion should be put into other possible causes of the problem. I always imported minorities.

Uncle Tgt:

First of all, thank you very much for your efforts in this case. I really appreciate it!
I flew about 15 times yesterday, and got a crash on four occasions. The GSL is on.

Three of the CTDs happened when I flew north to northwest of Valetta and looked towards the racecourse. On these occasions the sim froze for a second or two, and then it crashed.
The fourth happened immediately after loading the mission.

Unfortunately I have to take a break from this project now. Work is calling, and then I´m off to a vacation in Greece, where I won´t have access to the internet. I´ll be back in two weeks. I´ll do some more testing then, hopefully I can find a pattern which helps to find the problem.

In the meantime, thanks for all your help, see you then!

Enjoy your break.
:salute:
We'll be ready to assist on your return.

Meantime, your description does suggest your PC is struggling with the object complexity/ density around Valetta.

Perhaps it's time for Malta's buildings to get an "upgrade". Paging Robert John...

I saw that the campaign was updated again in september so i said to myself maybe this time ,so full of hope I made a brand new installation and I opened the first flight in the campaign and I got the message that following ships could not be found
GC_Camship
HMS Kenya 42
Hog_Islander
JMK_Thor_Combat
By the way, I can't find them in the readme.doc either, but I answered ok and finally I was on the deck of the ACC took of and landed safely (allmost) at Malta I brook of because my wife called for dinner and then you better obey. Ok I installed the missing ships and reflow the mission with the previous result CTD !!! Now I realised that JMK_Thor_Combat has caused me problems in the past: I deleted it and everything was fine again. I was now very happy and started the next operation I took off and when the enemy was in sight CTD!!!!! So now my ears are hanging like a Basset Hound's.

Hello again!

The break lasted longer than I anticipated, after my return from the vacation the situation at my job turned chaotic, and this used up most of my time..

Last night and today I had some time to test this again, and I might be onto something.
First of all, it is not the landclass (I turned it off and the sim still crashed) and it is not the GSL. At one time I suspected something might be wrong with the airplanes I used, so I made another test missions with airplanes I knew from other missions to work ok.
This turned out to be a good idea, because I happened to make the perfect mission for this purpose: It crashes right away after it loads!
At the beginning of the mission my airplane is pointed at this place:

View attachment 74296

Now, when "look" up into the sky at the moment the mission loads, it doesn´t crash immediately. It only crashes right away, when I look straight ahead.
On the occasions where it loads ok, I dogfight around the area for a while, and most times I get the CTD later on, but always when I look towards this racecourse.

Then I turned off the "Malta_BSK_V2" scenery (I left Landclass Malta and Malta1 and 2 active), and was able to fly the mission several times without a crash. I turned the scenery back on, CTD again!
Next I removed the two Valetta BGL files from the scenery folder (the racecourse is part of it), and again the mission runs without a problem! Put them back in, and the crashes reappear.

Since there was a mention of the St. Pauls BGL in another post before, I also tried the mission with these files removed, but the Valetta files in the folder: CTD!

So it seems that there is something with these two BGLs, ValettaNEW and ValettaNEW_A16N that my computer doesn´t like. Maybe someone with a good knowledge about scenery has an idea how to fix it?

Cheers,
skylane

I started working on the Malta CTD problem again, and returned to the thread about it that we had back at the beginning of September.
