Martin P4M-1/-1Q Mercator

Not trying to sidetrack from the Mercator discussion but...
I've always wished somebody would do a Vietnam OP-2E or RB-69 version of the P-2, or one of the earlier versions with the nose turret. Earliest model that I know of is J.R. Lucariny's donationware P2V-5/SP-2E.

Well, you can have a freeware Neptune for FS9 if you do a little work. And not much work is required.

Some years ago Tomohito Unayama released a series of P2V variants for FS2002. Alas, they didn't work properly in FS9 - lost their props and possibly some other animations. But...

Jaap de Baare and Harry Biard released an AI version of Unayama's FS2002 model, and all it's animations work in FS9. While it was intended as an AI plane, all you have to do is add sounds and a panel and viola, you have a flyable FS9 Neptune!

Bob Chicilo then released an updated set of flight dynamics files for FS9.

Alas, de Baare and Biard only converted the basic patrol bomber model for FS, and not the other models.

But on the positive side, all the FS2002 repaints of the patrol bomber work on the FS9 model.

You can get the FS9 AI model at Avsim, or at least you could when I downloaded it some years back.

You can find the original FS2002 model (for the panel and sounds) at AvSim - or again, at least that's where I found it years ago.

Or you could just buy the Alpha Simulations/Virtavia model if it's still available.

Just a quick note since we're talking Neptunes and Mercators....

Fábio Bonoldi & Luís da Costa Pereira did a really nice panel revamp for the Alphasim P2V-7, both 2D and VC with custom backlit gauges. Haven't seen it on any flightsim sites lately, but the file name is 'p2vpnlf' (without the tic marks) if you want to search for it. For all you proud owners of Alpha's superb Neptune, this is a must have. There are also some replacement props for the P2V-7 that were done by the same two blokes.

One thing about Daves P4M "Merc" that I don't think the Alpha Neptune has... you can shut off and start up those jet engines any time you want... in the air or on the ground, in the Merc. And they have a very realistic effect on the plane's flight characteristics. :medals: Not to mention the Mercator's very convincing engine sounds.

I really enjoy this Mercator with its control over both the piston and jet engines. Switching off the jets does make quite a difference to take offs. Well done and thank you David!

No problem

Gaucho, the national insignia goes on the underside of the starboard wing. Hope it's not too late to change it.

Thanks for pointing that out... being a retired officer... I know that... but it escaped my attention...
It can be changed very easily.... somehow the textures for right and left got switched...
Appreciate the reminder... By the way... do you know how to post pics so they show in actual size...
I've seen many great shots... but somehow, mine always show up small??????????

Easy correction...

Done... no problem... here is also a pic of the 2D panel WIP... Need to change the yoke... I sort of invented this one...
but now I made one from a pic of the real one...
By the way... the kudos should go to David... for the fantastic model... and after my bugging him about it...for retexturing
the internal armament bay, wing and fuselage mid-sections, etc. ... so that I could paint them.... A prince of a patient man!!!!

Now with the other yoke it looks more 60s-likeView attachment 69971

I did some more re-doing... lol
It is probably only "for now" panel... because David is redoing some of the mapping... and I will have to redo
the textures... but that will be no problem... and since I will be doing that... I might as well take a picture of
the actual bird and completely redo the 2D panel to faithfully depict it...
At any rate.. redoing these redos... I am getting pretty fast and accurate... good learning opportunity

I have been working on a more faithful reproduction of the real aircraft's panel
Not sure which one I will include... if anyone has suggestions... let me know

Hey Gaucho --

I have always been a left seat flyer (Sitting in the right seat to fly a helicopter blows me train of thought altogether) so I am partial to the left seat bitmap. I do like the full panel bitmap alot tho. Totally different from any other that I have seen.

Excellent work!! :medals: I will take either.

Thank you very much, sir.... As soon as I finish it, it will be available with the whole aircraft which we are
redoing with David...
Here is further progress on the dual yoke one...

Nice panel, Gaucho...but what are your plans for the windscreen? It doesn't look anything like the Mercator's cockpit.

I beg your pardon....

I don't know what your references are... but THIS is from an actual photograph in the monograph dedicated to the P4M!!!
The first one I did, although extremely nice lookin (se the posts before my last one) were unfortunately my invention.. never
having seen the real thing.. so I decided to do one that is the real McCoy...

I think the panel looks great. Maybe H52 was referring to the center post in the windshield?
