Maurice Clarett was a celebrated football running back. He attended Ohio State University on a full football scholarship, which meant he was supposed to pursue a degree. But, he thought he was just filling time for an NFL career. He never studied, rarely attended class, and at the time he never really had anyone who sought to change that.
He got in trouble in school, and tried to get drafted early into the NFL. But, the NFL had a requirement to finish a certain amount of college play first. He sued and "won" to be allowed into the draft.
He was drafted. He never made the Denver Broncos' roster! In fact, he never played in a regular season game!
Instead, he ended up without a football career and without a degree. He did wind up in a car pulled over by police with a sawed off shotgun, a sword, and wearing a bullet proof vest.
He was arrested on an illegal weapons charge (the sawed off shotgun) and sentenced to jail time.
He is now back at Ohio State to pursue his degree. It seems the good people at Ohio State are fulfilling their promise according to his scholarship, even though Clarett never understood at the time what the academic portion of his obligations were all about.
It turns out that in his case, the degree might save his life because he has finally learned that the meaning of life is not sports but achievement, not celebrity but honor, not riches but enrichment.
The good news is he appears to have now understood that reality. I hope he earns his degree. I hope he finds his achievement, honor, and enrichment in his life. I hope his example helps young people today learn this real truth early enough to walk a path less painful to earn it!
Cheers,
Ken
