With the first tangerine, they'd all reach the silent consensus that I'd lost it, and that perhaps sanity would prevail in the next room -- whereupon they'd all depart in a huff.

One fella in particular would be "highly indignant", figuring the entire concept was unforgivably "infra-dig".
