Merauke RAF aerodrome, New Guinea

Thanks Arndt. This RAAF airfield almost didn't happen. There was no real intelligence that the Japanese were likely to deploy significant forces in the south east of what was then Dutch New Guinea. Macarthur wanted to extend the allies left flank to be sure and leaned on Blamey, who set in a small force. Most of their opposition appears to have come from mosquitos. The Australian construction battalion which made the airfield did an outstanding job, turning what was basically a swamp into a relatively dry workable environment.
This looks like a good place to park a Vengeance!

Very nice, Arndt! Looks like you had a lot of fun building this one! :applause:

That SW coast of mainland Dutch New Guinea is neglected little corner of the CFS2 PTO. Any plans for Timoeka?

Cheers,
Chris

PS: Any particular source used for your airfield layout?

Awesome job...I'll have to get back into the Pacific one of these days...:ernae:

Thanks guys, I'm glad you like it. I was working on this one for a long time, changing & adding, putting it away for a month and starting again.
There wasn't a particular source, I found a map of it on the website of the University of Texas Libraries, but the link is not working at the moment, just checked it.Do a search for historical maps, maybe it will pop up. Then I searched for more detailed information on the net and started. The layout of the field is original, the town, AA-site and bridge are fictional. On Google Earth you can see what it looks like today & I took that as an example and made the layout to fit.
I read somewhere on the net that the japanese forces planned up to 70 airfields in that area of Dutch New Guinea, so there's still some more to do. And Timoeka is on the list.

Greetings, Arndt

Thanks Arndt!

As some know, I am building missions in New Guinea right now for General Kenney's 5th FEAAC fighters. Once in a while I also build a bombing run using RAAF and FEAAC bombers with AI fighter escorts just to change the pace. I will research this field and see if I can incorporate it into the missions.

I know that other than the Defense of Australia add-on, there are few missions using RAAF. Out of respect and great admiration for the Aussies I had the pleasure of working with in Vietnam, I will be building some of the joint missions flown by the USAAC-FEAAC and the RAAF in New Guinea area.

Okay, going to research this field............:ernae:

This is a fantastic site! And even with all the buildings and stuff. I can still get 30FPS or better!
