Microsoft is a pain

I'm still running IE6 also. No issues except there are times that you are asked if you want to install a new tool bar with new software. It's usually checked in a box so if you miss that it gets installed..... and not by your own doing. You have to look carefully and uncheck this stuff. Sounds to me that that's what happened to Helldiver. He missed seeing this crap and didn't uncheck the boxes when he installed IE8

HD, do a System Restore and go back to a date before you installed IE8. That should hopefully get you back on track again, and back to what you had before....without all the clutter.

You know, I just can't help but ROFLMFAO that a thread that combines anti-MS bitching with folks complaining about meaningless updates and new-fangled features.

You see, all the confusion and crap is a result of the pathological anti-MS crowd. MS killed Netscape by the time of IE5. Having one standard was too much for some folks if it had an MS label, so back to compatabilty problems with Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Mozilla and IE all fighting a browser war that actually should already be over...

Well, I can see your point. But my IE7 was always locking up, so I had to go out and find a browser that wouldnt lock up, daily, hour to hour.

I also couldnt get XP on my HP, and using vista's system of file navigation gave me gray hair.. I love XP.. And I loved IE6. And I loved Netscape...

I guess it goes to show you that some programs work flawlessly with some computers and some people, and some, it doesnt. I wish they did for me....

My suggestion to the ones who hate MS, have nothing but trouble, turn off your pooter...it isn't worth the stress. Good grief....we wouldn't even have all the flight games or the internet if it wasn't for MS....stop blasting them...remember they sometimes read the stuff in here...Mike

Agreed!

I used to run IE exclusively for the longest time just because I didn't know I had alternatives. I then had a buddy tell me about firefox and I thought, "oh great, another program to install and learn" then I realized there is nothing to it other than double clicking an icon and accessing the internet, nothing more. I have tried opera and a couple of others, but been very happy with FF and the no script blocker, saved my bacon a few times.

seein as how there is no aces studio anymore, i highly doubt they'll be coming in here anytime soon. and frankly, after the stunt they pulled with flight sim, i don't see how we owe them any love right now anyway.

I responded to Helldiver's comment about IE8 as I had very similar problems with it. Some of the comments that have followed have been helpful, others less so, some common sense, again others less so.

I very rarely download, buy or install anything until it has been around for a while and has been found to work reasonably well and has had any bugs found and ironed out. I have since read, if not understood, quite a bit of information about IE8 and have subsequently reinstalled it (too early to tell if all is well).

When I install any program, I want it to work and do the job for which it was designed and I want to do it hassle free. I don't want to know how or why it works, only that it does. It has nothing to do with being anti Microsoft, it has all to do with keeping what little of my hair remains from falling out.

we had one pop in here the other day who even posted, there people, if they like the place they'll come back

Also just for the sake of it, i use IE7 (gonna upgrade to 8 over the weekend) and dont have any problems with it, nor with any microsoft updates, my autogen sdk stuff still works fine, as do all my games, as do all my programs. I dont get any pop ups telling me what to do and everything works first time. I sometimes wonder if the problems sat between the keyboard and the chair, or if some people just cant help but mess around and things get broken :engel016: :ernae:
As its been said, theres plenty of alternatives to mircosoft nowadays, it gets boring reading all the anti microsoft threads after a while, specialy when the alternatives arnt exactly bug free and working fine ;)

Now I have been messing around with pooters (Computers) since 1953 when they were analog and most of you fellers were either being potty trained or playing with Barbie dolls.
I don’t say this to pull rank, it’s just that I lived through all of Microsoft’s iterations from MS DOS (My cup is attached) to all the different Windows as they came available, They used to be on 3.5 disks and you’d get bunch of them. If they had a better version, they’d sent it to you free with a nice letter from Bill Gates. If you had a problem with Windows, there would be a toll free number that took you into Redmond, Washington and a knowledgeable person would answer, right away.
Nowadays if you want to run a third or fourth copy of Windows they challenge you. If you have a question, it will cost you big money to talk to their technical staff. Usually some **** from some unidentified country that can’t even speak decent English.
They come out with a version of Windows that there is no backwards capability. This is wonderful news for all the millions of test machines that are designed for earlier versions of Windows. Plus they come out with four versions of the abortion that they call Vista.
Then they rushed out with FSX. Now it takes a pretty good computer to run it with good memory, a good CPU and an awesome video card. I got three friends that won’t touch it. They can’t afford the price of admission. Microsoft sort of corrected themselves by putting out FSX Acceleration which was what it should have been in the first place. By the way, if you want to run DX10 in FSX you got to be using Vista. Now innocently I downloaded Explorer 8. Some folks have no problem with it, but by the time I got rid of all the extra tool bars and the ten different things that they added to my favorites, plus the “Want to close all tabs” nonsense. I give up.

well, they never got to be as big as they did through wasteing money and not makeing any, from the business side it makes perfect sense :engel016:

I'm not sure where the idea of this is that anyone hates Microsoft.

Helldiver states they can be a pain, and some of us agree... and gave examples. But that doesn't mean anyone hates them.

Here's some of your helpful, or sympathetic remarks:

"You see, all the confusion and crap is a result of the pathological anti-MS crowd"

"My suggestion to the ones who hate MS, have nothing but trouble, turn off your pooter"

"it gets boring reading all the anti microsoft threads after a while, specialy when the alternatives arnt exactly bug free and working fine"

YOU guys are the ones bringing up hateful or anti-microsoft language. The rest of the posters here are bringing up sympathetic stories and helpful alternatives to Helldiver's original post.

Even the other posters that disagree with Helldiver aren't trying to start an argument, but supply their own examples in a decent manner.

Shame on the three of you.

A number of weeks ago for some reason the 'update' folder within my computer got corrupted. Hence,...I would get security updates that couldn't be installed. Through a bit of looking around,...I found an MS 800 'help' number. They couldn't have been more helpful and at no cost. The first two techies couldn't solve the problem so it was kicked upstairs to a 3rd one. It was a gal from India I think. She sure knew her stuff. I gave her permission to remotely take over my computer.
She went into the registry and various folders. Things happened quicker than I could observe. Eventually,...she 'rebuilt' the corrupted folder. Bingo!..............no problems since. I sent an email to her immediate supervisor what a great job all had done,...especially the final technician that fixed the problem.
Sure,....Windows will give me fits at times why things happen unexpectedly. But for the most part,...I'm pleased as a PC user.

I second!

I third. I'm regretting ever replying in the first place. Let's close it down.

Someone will start pretty much exactly the same thread again within a week anyway. Let's put this one to bed. :hand:
